Recently, the NCOER process in undergoing some changes. Suppose enlisted Soldiers received a DA 2166-8 instead of a DA 4856? Would doing so reflect a broad- more accurate reflection of the Soldier and competitive lifestyle in the junior ranks? Thoughts?

I think leaders should be counseling their Soldiers on the same values stated on the NCOER. Now, as far as processing it and uploading it into their OMPF I think that is a little much.

A basic knowledge of the NCOER for Soldiers as they move through the junior enlisted ranks would be great development for them. A Soldier being counseled by their SGT team leader on Competence, Physical Fitness, Leadership, Training, Responsibility and Accountability and then having their SSG squad leader give them a couple bullet comments (senior rater) would be good development.

Or counsel them monthly on a 4856 and then quarterly give them an Enlisted Evaluation Report on a 2166-8.

CSM- good point about uploading to OMPF; it could be a little much. I feel the evaluations could also prove useful for Soldiers who transition out of the Army. Not all make it into the NCO ranks.. And receive evaluations as we do. Suppose, if as an Army, we can prepare Soldiers for formal evaluations (as some civilian employers do) from their initial duty station, the product it should be produce will be an even more well rounded Veteran better equipped for civillian life.
