Yeah, I know, you've all told me that I'm never going to get into any branch of the military with only one kidney. The Army has already disqualified me and now I'm in the middle of trying to enlist in the Air Force. People keep telling me that I have no chance of joining, but I'm making more progress than you've all expected. My recruiter has my medical papers and he knows all about my one kidney. And yet, he didn't turn me down and give me an automatic disqualification. He said I can go take the ASVAB, which I took today and scored a 94 on, and then he said that he'll send my scores down to be looked at so that I can be considered for MEPS.

So....when does this so-called "automatic disqualification" show up, because I ain't seeing it. I took the ASVAB, scored high on it, and now I'm being considered for MEPS. And what happens when my recruiter says I'm in the clear for MEPS? What happens when I pass the physical and MEPS lets me swear in? What happens when they notice that my one kidney doesn't impede me in any way? Chances are you all will still be saying "You're never gonna get in! You're disqualified!"

I honestly just typed this up because I like that I'm proving you guys wrong so far. I've made it farther than any of you have anticipated and I'm just the type of guy who likes to rub things in.

Excuse me the first part of that message did not come out right. Was just trying to say you should have a more compatible attitude. Part of your attitude is great it seems to me but the part about rubbing things in is not. and also good luck hopefully things work out for you.

Be careful when you try and RUB THINGS IN ! May backfire and make you look like a idiot. It also shows a BAD attitude which is a not a great first impression. Military life is not for everyone. To attempt to mock those WHO HAVE SERVED/ARE SERVING shows a great deal about your CHARACTER ! Why ask for advice if you are not WILLING TO LISTEN TO IT ? I feel for you but being a jerk about it will get you NOWHERE !

I'm confused... At first you keep saying that you're trying to join the military, but then later you say you're trying to join the Air Force. So which is it? You can't do both, so are you joining the military or the Air Force?

No, that person posted again about 2 weeks after this post that, as everyone else pointed out, the DOD prohibits enlisting with one kidney, and the Air Force turned them down.

Unless I'm reading it wrong, that idiot kid got 1,700 positive "votes" for his post. In a simpler age, the lack of social media protected people from themselves...

Me either. The fact that nearly 2K people who can read also appreciated his comment is very troubling.

Madison, your attitude is seriously lacking in terms of dignity. I will repeat what others have said over and over, You will NOT join any branch of the United States military with only one kidney and no brains. It's great you set your sights high, but where is your fallback plan WHEN you fail? I'm sure Chuckie cheese has openings. With an attitude like that, you'll be lucky to secure a job delivering pizza. Maybe you should strive for another lofty goal, try NASA, they use guinea pigs. In all seriousness, you do need to square away that attitude and realize not everyone is meant for the military and in particular, my Marine Corps.

Your attitude sucks. Seems like you're taking out your anger for only having one kidney on the people answering your question. Regardless, if you can't get into the military there's other ways of serving and contributing to our country. You always have the option of becoming a civil servant working for the department of defense. Go to USAJOBS and look for employment there. Granted, it's nothing like being in the service but at least you will be part of the civilian team that supports the warfighters, which is something you can take pride in doing.

Look son, obviously none of us online here know what we're talking about. So I tell you what. Go to MEPS, let all of us in here know what the MD's tell you when you get back from there. OK? We know absolutely nothing about how the military works and your recruiter has all the answers.

You seem like the type of guy who gets a blanket party in basic. I’m all for anyone who wants to serve. I wanted to serve my whole life, my best friend wanted to serve but he’s color blind and flat footed, he’s also the last male of his bloodline so that could have been a problem as well. I know being barred from service was/is very hard on him, I would have taken him with me to the sandbox over a lot of people who actually did go with me. If you are granted a waiver and get in your attitude needs to change. There is no room in the military for square pegs in the round holes. You may think that these people are being mean to you but Honestly if you cannot handle some hard truths on a message board then the military is not for you. The real world is so much harder than that and reality is that the enemy will not care about your kidneys or your asvab score, .762 kills regardless.

Look kid. Alot of senior NCOs and Officers are on this thread, all saying the same thing.

And they are right. First off, check the attitude. Nobody cares that your recruiter lied to you. And nobody cares that you think your all that because you scored high on the ASVAB and MIGHT go to MEPS. Key word here is might. I highly suggest you pull your head from your 5th point of contact, or you won't make it very far. Not in the civilian world, and certainly not in ours.
