The VA doesn't have unlimited resources to give anyone whatever type of eyeglasses they want. They provide eyeglasses that meet your visual needs, but anything above that comes at the member's expense.

PVT Simon Menchaca - He wouldn't have to do without glasses; he just wouldn't have the better frames that he preferred. There's a big difference.

SGT Lorenzo Nieto - You can keep being angry with me but the reality remains the same, you have the glasses the VA is going to give you unless you pay more.

SGT Lorenzo Nieto I understand your point but at the same time, be thankful you get what you do get! At least they aren't the butt ugly black frame glasses they issued in boot camp! There was probably a time when that's all they gave Veterans. I go to the V.A. for my glasses also and accept the selection I don't have to pay for and, they even provide progressive lenses.

Why should I have to pay for better quality eyeglass frames at the VA?

Being the VA I would have expected they would only provide something on par with what we were issued in Basic Training.

I have been getting a free pair every year. They kinda are like "birth control" styling, but I use them for reading. I am thankful that we have this benefit.

you only have a select few frames that are free. same for lenses you have to pay for them to be upgraded to polarized, progressive lenses and the better frames. for some people that does not matter but i always opt for the lenses that adjust to dark in the sun, titanium frames and progressive lenses as i cannot tolerate lined bifocals. i alternate years so each year i get prescription sunglasses then next i get regular glasses and in my case my eye sight has not changed so i am lucky in that regard. if i recall you have a dollar amount limit so its just options for the veteran.

Mine are Polarized, Darken In The Sun, ~ Previously Had Progressive Lenz ~ But I Just Chose A Stock Frame From The Display Samples. I Also Have Eye Glasses Available Through South-West Medical; My Medicare Provider, But VA's Actually A Better Deal.
FREE Beats Any Co-Pay. ~ "Hands Down" ~ What-Ever that Means~

I also had to pay extra. However, the payment was not the problem. The problem was in getting a satisfactory pair of glasses. I order sunglasses and the local VA had to send them back twice due to poor quality of workmanship. First pair the lens did not fit in the frame and kept popping out. Second pair the shading in the lens was drooping and running - could not see out of them! Third pair was marginal and I will never go to the VA again for glasses!

Many Moons Ago When I Was Around 40, I Purchased A Pair Of Glasses From A
Well Known Company. When I Picked Them Up & Put Them On, I Could Have Seen Better Without Them. I Went To The Customer Servicer Desk And Explained The Problem,
ASSUMING I'd Be Scheduled For A Reappointment For Another Eye Exam & The Correct Prescription And Glasses. BUT She Looked Up The Records, Held Up My Glasses & Said
"They Look Fine To Me, Wear Them For A Few Days & Try Them Out Then Get Back With Us If You Still Have The Same Problem" ~ Once Again I Stated "I Can't See Well At All With These". To Which She Responded With "Your Eyes My Have To Get Use To Them".
Well, Being The Nice Guy I Am, I Picked-Up My Glasses, Bent Them In 1/2 Then Tossed Them Across Their Office And Replied "You're Not Even Fa-Kin Listening" And Walked Out The Door.. I Just Do NOT Handle "Stupid" Well

Ask for an appt using VA Community Care. After the exam, they have a large case holding a couple dozen frames to pick from. I then added the gradual tinting and lens protection.
The tinting was ruined one time cause I left them in my truck in the direct sunlight and/or heat (it’s called crazing). The lenses were replaced. Ya; they aren’t the most stylish of frames….; but I’m too cheap to spend $$$ for name brand or style.

I asked for sunglasses instead and was told no. They have to be regular clear lenses. Also had no option to upgrade to a better frame and lenses.

The VA operates within a budget, and unfortunately, that means they don’t have unlimited funding to cover every option, even though all veterans deserve it after service.
The reality is that while the VA covers the basic medical needs, including standard frames and lenses, when it comes to higher-end or more personalized options (like designer frames or frames with certain features), they often don’t cover the extra cost.
This is because the VA provides what's considered "standard issue," and better quality frames are often seen as a personal choice rather than a medical necessity.
At the end of the day, it’s your personal choice if you want different frames that fit your style or needs better. But it’s definitely tough when you feel like you’ve already earned more consideration.

I've heard similar stories. The VA system is... complicated, to say the least. Have you tried talking to someone higher up? Maybe a patient advocate or someone in the VA's administration? Document everything, appointments, bills, etc. and keep pushing.

IMPORTANT SIDE NOTE: Ref; Getting Medications~ Medical Equipment, Etc
From ANY VA Facility, We Are NOT "Assigned" To Any Facility ~ Regardless Of
What You'll Be Told, So SAVE This Info. Because IF You Ever Need Service From
Outside, Your VA WILL Only Tell You What They Were TOLD ~ Few Have Ever
Even HEARD Of It.~~ Unrestricted As Well ~ But This Point Will Also Be Argued.
~~ You WILL Need Proof And This Is IT~~
My Question:
"Is A Military Veteran Entitled To Care And Supplies,
Through ANY VA Facility, Regardless Of Where He Resides"?
Reply From Benefits.Gov
YES, a military veteran can receive medical products from out-of-state VA facilities, even if they are not living there. However, the veteran must be eligible for VA care without needing to enroll or be enrolled in VA health care 1. The eligibility for community care is dependent upon a veteran’s individual health care needs or circumstances 1. In most cases, veterans must receive approval from VA prior to obtaining care from a community provider 1. VA staff members generally make all eligibility determinations 1. Please note that VA is not authorized to ship medications or medical/surgical supply items outside of the U.S. or its territories 2. If you’re a veteran who lives overseas, you remain entitled to the benefits and services you earned through your military service. Most VA benefits are payable regardless of your place of residence or nationality 3. If you’re moving outside the U.S., you’ll need to sign up for the Foreign Medical Program. Through this program, VA will pay for certain needed health care services received in foreign countries to treat a service-connected disability or a disability that’s making a service-connected condition worse.
I hope this helps
