I think that this guy is what I would call a 'bridge burner.' After he lost his career, he lashed out at some of the only friends he was likely to have left - the people in the chief's mess. People who are reckless in their personal lives like his behavior demonstrates are on a downward spiral of self destruction.

I don't know the one mentioned in the article, however I do know one that lost his not only his stars, but his anchors as well. Seven counts of sexual harassment and ten counts of fraternization

Its too bad, but if the situation warranted it, he had to go. Unfortunately there's no info given to form an opinion on. Its hard to see one "Oh, Sh!t" wipe out a career if that's the case, but even on the civilian side things like this happen constantly. Zero tolerance for error, regardless of how small, seems to be the norm.
