Veteran Of 2/506th Calls Out Fake Ranger At Oxford Valley Mall
A former Infantryman, Ryan Berk, from Easy Co 2/506 101st sent us this video of him calling out a fake Ranger at a local mall. This guy couldn't answer basic...
This guy was called out at a mall in PA by a vet.

He claims he went to basic at Ft Jackson and is stationed at Ft Lewis, and claimed belonging to the Ranger's 2nd Battalion, versus going to basic at Ft Benning.
Rhetorically asking, is that battalion stationed at Ft Lewis in beautiful Seattle? I thought they all were at Ft Benning, as noted below he got that part right. This guy did his research to a point, but falls short when claiming he joined with a MOS of a driver but could not come up with the MOS code for that job.
Oddly enough other than the fact that he is big tub of goo. He almost looked like he could have gotten away with the ruse if it weren't for claiming the third combat badge and missing other items on his uniform.

The 2nd Ranger BN is currently based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The guy in this video seemed to know enough to spit out some facts, but is definitely a fake. If I were the guy confronting him, I would have insisted to meet his CSM...

Assuming WIKI is correct they claim every conflict from 63 to 95 was under the Vietnam umbrella except Desert Storm. In theory the youngest to get one assuming wiki is correct would be in their 40's if they went to Desert Storm, Somalia and one of the two GWOT campaigns. Most likely said person would have graduated High School 1990 making that person 43 by now.

It is a fact, if you were deployed for OJC and again for DS/DS, you only received one award. They didn't even invite us to the ceremony, but we did get in front of the line to sign out on block leave. There are plenty of people with a second award now days, but three, not many at all.

There is a Facebook page called "Stolen Valor" that does investigations and "outs" posers like this "individual" ... that's where I first saw this video. Had I encountered this poser, I would have professionally exercised my "general military authority" as an officer and corrected this faker, to include insisting he take me to meet his "CSM" face-to-face. I have a feeling I would have "insisted" he go change into civilian clothes and surrender his unauthorized uniform and accoutrements, as he was in violation of, at a minimum, 10 USC 771 and possibly the federal Stolen Valor Act (if he received discounts / freebies while posing as a Soldier).

That mall is in Langehorne Pa, a suburb 20 minutes away from Philly. I grew up in walking distance, for me anyway, from it and apent many hours there. I dont recognize the faker and if the name is correct, i dont recognizie it either.
The main reason he was able to get away with it so well is that area of Bucks County isnt heavily laden with retirees or former military of more recent times but in that its population has exploded over the last 20 years. A good number of Vietnam Vets and Guard. That area had so few vets of modern era that when I came home from Desert Storm and went to that mall, it seemed as though everyone knew who I was, no one else that I knew of in the area went to that war.
So as this guy is walking around, and no doubt knows that what I stated holds true, he knew he could pass it off and no one would know better. Except the 506th vet.
Probably looking for discounts and recognition.

Except it seems like with social media that you will outed at some point. Even in a small podunk town someone will eventually take a snap or post you on their site. "Look at my new friend who is an army Ranger." It would seem eventually you would get called out if continuing to do it. Now he is caught I wonder if he stop the ruse. It seems that all these fakers try to be some super hero in their fantasy. If he would have researched the transportation MOS and found some indiscreet unit like an ARNG somewhere in a far state and was posing that guy he would have been more believable.
They obviously will do this more in places where there is a lower chance of getting caught. It is interesting how much researched the subject and still got it wrong.

So true. Unfortunately theres no end to wjat one will do togsin recognit, appeasement and praise. Some get it right and go on for years begore getting called out while others make it too obvious. Its ashame but until something changes by law it will stay an is what it is situation. Sad.

Yet another stolen valor. Like previous posts I have suggested that we need to make those individuals join the military for real and treat them well.

On a positive note, I doubt that anyone would have attempted to "steal valor" during the Vietnam War period. Most of us ditched our uniforms and every sign that we were military as soon as we rejoined the civilian world. Today's environment is quite different, isn't it? If anything, these attempts to "steal valor" tend to reflect the respect that service men and women are accorded these days.
Now, before you jump all over me, I'm not excusing their behavior. I'm just commenting on an interesting aspect of it...

I think a large part of that is the current glorification of the military. The draft in the Vietnam era, along with the constant PR scandals went a long way to fueling the fire of an already burgeoning antiwar movement. Nowadays some of the biggest franchises in entertainment revolve around military operations, both fictional and real.

Interesting. A1C you could be correct, probably are. Still, whatever the cause, I'm just happy to see that service members aren't vilified as they were in my day and stolen valor tends to demonstrate the trend
