There's a ton of great content out there dealing with military subject matter (training / operations-related, motivational, entertaining & educational, historical, etc.); the idea is to have a fun and thought-provoking discussion, and to learn a thing-or-two while we're at it. If you can remember details but not the title; no worries, just post a description, and we'll activate the RP network to help find it. Here we'll discuss those defining sources that influence us, our culture, as well as public perception and opinion... sort of a representation of the "art-imitates-life, life-imitates-art" concept. Well, there's certainly some memorable content out there, I have my favorites and I'm sure that that you all do too. So, strap on your seatbelts, pull-up a keyboard, and let's get this thing started; thank you for all that you do, and... see you all in the discussion threads!

Growing up with a passion for patriotism and the lust to serve my country I enjoyed films like Patton, The Winds of War and the Remembrance of War, and as time went on the modern version of Pearl Harbor. Shows like this caught my attention, but movies like Heartbreak Ridge and Full Metal Jacket enabled me to realize the perils of war and the impact they had on those who served. Having served, and now an adult my responses are different. Suffering from PTS and thinking I was ready to see Hollywood's rendition of war, and the Navy SEALS endeavor to extract Bin Laden have impacted my decisions about what I watch and will allow my young children to know of war. While I have not seen Lone Survivor, I have seen the Hurt Locker and feel it did its best in a Hollywood sense of being to describe war and the role of our EOD specialist. However, I was recently introduced to a new movie call "Hornets Nest," a movie that centers on two Army units and the 8th Marines Force Recon teams. The premise of this movie is not to leave the public with the feel good sense that America triumph over tyranny but was meant to enable the public to see the war through the eyes of those on the ground, and the Third Party Nationals impacted by war. While new to theaters this movie will not be found in mainstream theaters, as it has not been backed by mainstream Hollywood. I urge you though to find it, watch it and heal along with the rest of us. I was urged to see this movie knowing it would hurt but help to heal. Finally if you go to Hornetsnest.com you will be able to gain a better idea into what you will see and expect. Look to the bottom of the site and you will see that the proceeds of the movie are being donated to the war's fallen and associative organizations.

Without a doubt Band of Brothers. That mini-series was great. Taken from letters written home at time and from the diary of Major Dick Winters. I still cry when I watch "Why we Fight".

The documentary Tom Hanks put together with the Vietnam POW's. It was amazing. Also, any of their books. Robbie Risner, Bud Day, John McCain, Eddie Alvarez, Stockdale and many others have written books on their time in Hanoi and nothing else I have seen or read really gives you the full picture of what they went through. I passed Day's book to an airman in my office and it ended up spreading like wildfire. They were fascinated and I couldn't order books fast enough for these kids. It's a great way to teach your airmen some history and to show them what true leaders and heroes look like.
