While there will be many SFCs that will disagree with the Army's decision (let's not forget, G1 doesn't make the call, this was decision was blessed off on by the Chain of Command), something had to be done in order to balance promotions and the draw down. This was the best option they could agree on. I could run the statistics (and probably will when I get back to the office) but Army-wide, the SFCs that will not be looked at for MSG probably have already had at least 4 boards where they were not selected. Officers have a 2 time non-select rule, what's so bad about NCOs being told "hey you are retirement eligible and have been passed over for promotion at least 4 times. Maybe you need to be proud of what you accomplished and just call it a career. Thanks for your service, here is your retirement check." Is that really so bad? Look at how many people didn't even make it to 20yrs, or even to SFC. I know I never thought I would make it this far and I'm proud of what I have done. I will keep pushing to go further but if I get passed over 4 times for MSG, you can bet I'll be first in line to hand over my DA 4187 request for retirement. I just wish I could plug a USB into my head and pass down all my knowledge and wisdom to the next generation!

No G1 may not make the call, but their input is weighed heavily and does at times make a diff. with the chain of command (which by the way is a lonely Brig. Gen. who has nothing to do). When a SFC gets passed over rest assured it has something to do with his/her performance and what was not accomplished. I have seen many men climb rank so fast, dust did not have time to settle.

Sometimes you just have to let it go I was a SFC for 14 years. No UCMJ whatsoever, EIB, CIB, ABN, three combat tours, two BSMs. Three years in an E-8 position with rated time as a 1SG. After 24 years I respectfully retired. I am still proud of my accomplishments, but also realized I was keeping someone else from advancing. I have never regretted my decision.

They must have some data indicating the younger SFC are more qualified than the ones that have more time and experience. This is just speculation and I really have no clue.

I can tell you that going from a place where most troopers are type-A personality, been down range multiple times, completed numerous schools (both career progression and leadership) and NCOES as soon as available that this may be a reason over others who have become stagnant. I arrived to my current Bn while they were in Kuwait and was told I wasn't going to receive a PLT b/c I was a cherry SFC by the MSG who was rear-d SGM. (If I can manage up to 60 recruits, two SSGs and coordinate training as a SDS for the last year, I'm pretty sure I can handle a fully manned PLT). I was a little disgusted seeing as 4 other SFC (all on rear-d waiting for the Bn to return) were all over 20 and I've done more in half the time of their careers. Some NCOs just don't know when to call it a day b/c they're comfortable and can ride it out to 26 yrs while doing the minimal work and taking up a slot. Just b/c a Senior NCO has time under his belt doesn't means he's good at what he does, just means he's been doing enough to level out. (I apologize for this little rant, hope it makes sense and I don't mean to offend to many)

SFC (Join to see) - Just keep at it. I was selected to be a 1SG on my current deployment over MANY other senior NCOs with twice my TIS. Your time will come; hard work doesn't go unnoticed.

Training Management and the 8step training model are areas I see young PLs AS3s and young SSG/SFCs struggle, because it's an experience that was pushed to the back burner since GWOT has been going on.

I suppose it means if you haven't made it by now then you need to retire.

SFC John Martin i noticed you down voted my post but gave no response as to why? I encourage others to have their own views and feel free to express them but in this instance, you have not stated your position or why you seem to disagree with my supposition that was in response to the OP's question.

I chose to vote this one down, because it doesn't have anything constructive to say. I enjoy the Army very much and fall into this category, and don't feel ready to retire. Conduct some research on my MOS and the grade plating and how it affects out MTOEs, end-strength and selection rates. We lost over half of the MSG billets and had QSP his some of the MSGs with good careers and forced them out early. We promoted 0/0/6/24 over the last 4 boards that you mentioned in your detailed post. I had my looks with those results, so was a little excited with one more look before I retire. So that's my comment. Good luck to those that are still in the zone. Happy Thanksgiving all!!

Not all posts have something constructive, many are just someone's personal opinion (as my original one was). Here on RP, down votes are usually reserved for a significant disagreement as they also cause a loss of points. It's not like a "dislike" button. I'm empathize with your post about your MOS, but the same is happening all across the Army. Hopefully those that MSGs that were QSP were able to retire. I know too many good Soldiers that were put out and didn't have enough time to qualify for and any benefits. We should all put more effort in making sure our Congress members do a better job of supporting the military rather than themselves.
