Finishing up a year long school, was told that being a reservist I have to sell my leave. Has anyone come across this before when reclassing?

You either have to sell the leave, or get your orders extended in order to use the leave. When I came back from Afghanistan, I had my orders extended in order to use the accrued leave so I still got paid while I traveled around to see friends and family. I would probably do the same thing if I ever got deployed again. It's better than selling back the leave, because selling it you only get basic pay....using it you get paid including allowances....

Once you end active duty and return to the Reserves. what good is the leave? Sell it, take the money and enjoy.

It's not just about keeping the leave. It also involves who you want to process the leave i.e. if the finance office you're using is unreliable do you return to Reserve status and play telephone/e-mail games with an office 10 hrs away or do you wait till you get your unit and have them process it for you? I've seen a school tell everyone they have to sell it back immediately but as soon as I called my unit I am told that doesn't sound right, we sold back someone else's leave for them.

There are many issues with using the Leave accrued. BAH, BAS, UCMJ, potential for illness or injury, etc... It is possible to use the 30 (+2.5 accrued while on Leave) days but very unlikely. It's easier and a much cleaner slate when you just sell the days back.
An example of when they will HAVE to allow you to use the Leave is if you have already Sold Back Leave. I'm pretty sure the cap is 45 days in your career.

No, but I was active when I re-classed to Respiratory. Sounds fishy to me.

You get leave in the Reserve? I thought that you were allowed said days for Authorized Absenses or Reskeds; must be something different the Army does.

I think you're misunderstanding the post. You get leave for 30 days on active duty, doesn't matter your component.

Yes it's common any time we go on orders over 30 days. The school house S-1 / finance should take care of everything for you. You should see an LES noting Accrued leave about a month after your orders end.

Im not getting your situation, what school are you talking about and how are you infantry reservist ? Ive never heard of selling leave unless you are redeploying or something in that nature. That was probably one time when I heard something about selling leave.

Selling back leave is the norm...you don't get a real chance to use it unless you're back on active duty. A Reservist goes to school for 6 months, comes home with 6 months of leave and gets the cash because when they get off orders there is no leave.

The reserves has infantry. One whole infantry battalion. They’re headquartered out of Hawaii with companies all over the pacific. FYI
Last time I deployed in 2014, before orders were cut I was given the option of selling leave or using it. I obviously used it and the orders were cut to reflect an extra 30 days. One of my Reserve Marine buds was allowed to keep his leave and use it next time he deployed. Maybe they do things different in crayon eating land. :)
