I was the 1SG for my company for approximately 30 days before our current 1SG came in. I understand that since it was under 90 days my duty position will not be rated as a 1SG, but I was under the impression I would still be allowed to annotate a bullet on my NCOER stating my time served as the "acting" 1SG. I am being told otherwise. I have looked in the regulations I can find but I cannot find anything that states the bullet not being allowed.
Can someone please assist with this?
Thanks.

Absolutely..
o selected by the Command Team to serve as interim First Sergeant from YYYYMMDD to YYYYMMDD
(You could even beef that up to say "selected over X SFCs")

You've received some sound advice already SFC (Join to see). I would like to echo these and say you absolutely should have your time annotated as a bullet on your NCOER. Serving as a 1SG entails a ton of responsibility and to handle that as a SFC, even for 30 days, is commendable and you should receive the credit for that. I hope that you pursue this and it gets annotated on your NCOER. Good luck!!!

CSM Charles Hayden Passed 7/29/2025
1SG Steven Stankovich As a new CAARNG SGM, I was detailed to take a small cohort of Guardsmen to Ft Carson for two weeks integration/training in 1972.
1SG Nate Barnes assumed the duties of an Tank Co’s 1SG who had gone Elk hunting.
There was no BLIP. 1SG Barnes was qualified and demonstrated it!
I did ‘lose’ one Troop for tat two weeks, he was of the E-4 Mafia type and proved it!
I also saw the sad state of the Army in 1972’s post Vietnam years. Sharing that knowledge with the 4th ID’s seniors did not sit well!

While you cannot be rated in that position due to the minimum time not being net, you may (and should) certainly use it as a bullet on your evaluation.

You also may look at placing acting company first sergeant under your additional duties on the front side of the NCOER

As far as I know there is no regulation saying you can't use that, if you are being told no then I would ask for proof. When I was in command I had a SFC as my 1SG when mine got pulled to be the BN CSM. It was less then 90 days so no NCOER but I made sure that a bullet was included about his time as a 1SG.

SFC (Join to see) - Although you didn't get the rating, does your time being an acting 1stSgt count towards you becoming one later in the future?

From a sister service perspective, I know the AF does allow it. I know tons of people that have the acting 1Sgt bullet, acting section chief, acting NCOIC, etc for X number of days. We view it as important to put in our EPRs because it shows working above or outside of your normal position and having a bigger scope of responsibility. it is REALLY important for those meeting SNCO Selection Boards.

My squadron had two training Unit Training Assemblies (UTA). I acted as the 1st Sgt on the second UTA. Did this for years assisting the "real" 1st Sgt. Then when the 1st Sgt became the Wing Command Chief, I was brought in active duty for 64 days until a replacement 1st Sgt was selected. This was indeed one of my proudest moments in my career. I balanced this along with being the squadron Safety NCOIC, Newcomers Flight Instructor and AFRC Senior NCO Leadership Class Facilitator. But being the acting 1st Sgt was the most satisfying "extra duty". I salute ALL 1st Sgt's.

If you can't find it yourself, then it may not be there. Have the person telling you that you can't do it show you where he is getting his information. If he can't do so, then go from there.

It was included in my NCOER when I was acting as Platoon Sergeant for around 40 days in a deactivating unit. Not sure f it was right, but it went through.

Thanks for the input. I am pretty sure I can have that bullet put in there since I did serve in the position for a short period of time. In addition to that, I have an NCO that served as the platoon sergeant for my platoon while I was the First Sergeant. He is facing the same scenario but I agree with you. Thanks again.

Good call on the open door, MSG(P) Robert Brostoski. You should definitely get the recognition for the work you put in. That's what NCOERs are for.
