According to FM 7-22:
The UFR elicits intangible rewards gained from running with a group, such as esprit de corps, team
building, and discipline. Unit formation runs are based on a time and/or distance that can be achieved with unit
integrity and a display of unit cohesion. Unit formation runs are organized by squad, platoon, company, or
battalion; not by ability. Keeping a large unit in step, with proper distance intervals and correct running form,
offers intangible benefits that commander’s desire. Commanders should not use UFRs as the foundation of their
PRT program. They should be performed no more than once per quarter due to the limited training effect
offered for the entire unit.
So tell me why we do it 3 and 4 times a quarter? Again with the hypocratic - "Do as I say, Not as I do"

I don't know about 101st runs I spent time in the 82nd Airborne Division and 18th Airborne Corp. At Ft. Bragg . We had impressive runs too . But that was back in the Day before running in sneakers and shorts. We had unit tee shirts . I don't remember any complaining that we had to run . We double timed every were we went as a unit .

FM 7-22 is doctrine and does not bind us like regulations. Doctrine is a guideline for leaders to follow and is not punitive if not followed precisely. Sounds like you have a command issue or a commander that likes to run. You know what they say...suck it up buttercup!

The key word is "SHOULD" in that sentence. As soon as the word should is read, that can be interpreted to mean "should your unit be available to do weekly Espirit-de-Corp Runs, then that is great! Should they be too busy training, that once a quarter is a good consolation prize."

Should , could , or would . "Just getter done" . You could spend the whole year complaining about what you could or would or even should do . Esprit de Corp is something that is in You and in your unit . If you don't have it you need to go find something else to do . It is something you can see , in the actions of those who have it and use it in a unit . It can be found in how strait your uniform is . How clean your weapon is . Who well your unit drills as a unit . It is that thing that is in every soldier who retires , without it they would have never made it to retire.

SGT (Join to see) That is the mindset of the Soldier of this generation, just get it done. They/we have done more with less over the last 15 years, and with more rules than the any of the other recent generation of Soldiers. Esprit de corps is not just unit runs, and too many unit runs all the time actually have a negative effect on unit morale.

Therein lay the issue. Those that should be good things are considered chores now. Whether runs or 'mandatory fun days,' we do not take joy in those moments.
