For my fellow Army NCOs, have you thought about volunteering for Recruiting assignment? If so, what are some questions you have?

I am wondering if I volunteer for a Recruiting assignment what is the likelihood of me getting somewhere close to where I live at now here in Southern Maryland? I really like the area that I am in and would love to keep my family in one place for a bit longer.

SSG Wood,
It's not impossible to get a recruiting assignment relatively close to your current assignment. However, there are a couple things to keep in mind. The first being that USAREC generally likes to assign SM's away from their last assignment locations but I have seen plenty of SM's not have to actually move or that far. It depends on availability and priority assignments needing to be filled. Soldiers submit a list of assignment preferences and the assignments team goes down that list in order of preference until they get a BN that is at 99% manning strength or less, unless there are priority BN's with shortages to fill. SM's are only assigned down to the BN level and most of the BN's cover expansive AO's. Once assigned to a BN, it is on the SM to contact the BN Assignment Manager to workout their pinpoint assignment.

Is there a way to talk to the assignment managers in my area to see if there is any openings in my area? If so, is it possible to get my name reserved for one of their openings in my area and then drop my recruiters packet? That's if there are any openings of course.

Sfc Pierce, what is the likelihood of getting your assignment preference? My wife wants us to go to Atlanta, GA to be closer to her family and recruiting is the only GF assignment that can get us there. Thank you.

SSG Nguyen,
USAREC assignment prefences are essentially a wish list. Depending on whether you are DA Selected or Volunteering, you will either select your Recruiting Battalion Assignment Preferences while at the Army Recruiter Course or prior to arriving. The assignment given is based on manning strength needs in coordination with your preferences. However, their are no guarantees. Also, keep in mind the assignment is only down to the Battalion level for CONUS based Soldiers. Once assigned, Soldiers need to contact the Battalion's Assignment Manager to find out their pinpoint assignment to a recruiting center.
