Overview

Orange County Corrections Department is seeking highly motivated candidates to fill the position of Non-Certified Correctional Officer. This is a paid Trainee/Academy Recruit Position for applicants who are NOT Certified as a Correctional Officer in the State of Florida. Only those selected candidates who successfully complete the pre-employment process and are hired by the Orange County Corrections Department will be sponsored in a Correctional Academy to become a Certified Correctional Officer.

Representative Duties
•Supervises incarcerated persons to ensure the safety of the facility, corrections staff and other inmates or Youthful Offenders to include the prevention of altercations, intimidation and other undesirable or illegal acts.
•Maintains accurate count and current location of all inmates or Youthful Offenders assigned.
•Completes and maintains required records, logs and reports.
•Performs cell and body searches as required.
•Ensures safe, secure and orderly movement of inmates throughout the facility.
•Performs security and safety checks and adheres to facility security procedures.
•Ensures, to the limit of authority possible, that inmate rights are observed-and that they are treated according to policy.'•Supervises inmate or Youthful Offender work crews.
•Acquires knowledge of all emergency plans and procedures and maintains emergency equipment.

Minimum Qualifications
•High school graduate or equivalent.
•Must be at least 19 years of age and a United States citizen.
•Must not have been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude.
•Must be able to work all shifts, weekends and holidays.
•Possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License. Depending on area of assignment, may be required to possess and maintain a valid Florida Class B Commercial Driver's License (i.e. Transportation Section, etc.).
Notes
In addition, Orange County Corrections uses the following Hiring Standards in accordance with FDLE regulations and they include, but are not limited to:
•Not have been convicted of any felony or a misdemeanor that involves perjury or a false statement.
•Not have been guilty or nolo contendere after July 1, 1981, to any felony or of a misdemeanor that involves perjury or a false statement, whether or not adjudication was withheld or sentence suspended.
•Not have committed a felony crime within three years of the date of application.
•Not have been convicted, accepted a plea bargain, or entered a pre-trial diversion program of any offense which can be considered domestic violence.
•Not have been using or possessing any controlled substance within the last three (3) years prior to application and continuing to employment.
•Not have been involved in any illegal sale or trafficking of a controlled substance to others whether for profit or not.
•Not have been discharged from a job within the last year.
•Not have received a Written Reprimand or greater within six (6) months from date of application.
•Not have five (5) convictions singly or in combination for any traffic violations, except parking tickets, covered under any State or Federal law, or any valid ordinance of a municipality or county.
All applicants selected for hire must successfully complete a level II background check which includes polygraph examination, psychological assessment and fingerprints.

Basic Abilities Test (BAT) - Correctional Officer Test Information
BAT is a test required by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Selected. Applicants will be required to submit proof that they have taken and passed the BAT in order to continue in the hiring process. The test is available at local colleges (such as Seminole and Valencia) and is taken at the applicant's expense.

All applicants will be required to participate in a Physical Abilities Test (PAT).
The Physical Abilities Test (PAT) consists of a series of physical activities designed to evaluate fitness to perform specific job-related tasks. The battery of job-related field tests is intended to be completed in the fastest possible time and will require effort on the part of the applicant. The test is designed to measure balance, muscular endurance, strength, flexibility, aerobic and anaerobic power and capacity, and fine motor skills.

The Physical Ability Test (PAT) minimum fitness standards that candidates are required to successfully perform are listed below:

The test includes two 220 yard runs, jumping over obstacles (12-24 inches high), climbing over a wall (40 inches high), a 50-foot serpentine run followed by a low crawl through a 27-inch high, 8-foot long area, and a 10-stair descent using 7-inch high / 11-inch wide steps. After the stair descent, the applicant goes back through the obstacle course, in reverse order. The entire process is to be completed within 6 minutes.

All qualified candidates will receive notification of their eligibility for the Physical Ability Test and also the opportunity to sign up for available dates and times via e-mail to the e-mail address that was provided at the time of application. All internal applicants are responsible for updating their PeopleSoft personal information to include a current e-mail address prior to submitting the application.

Salary

Correctional Officer Trainees who are not yet certified in the State of FL are paid $19.03 per hour during their Academy/Training period. Upon successful completion of the Corrections Academy, receiving a passing score on the State Exam, and validation of the Certification Requirements as outlined by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement; the base salary will increase to $20.02 per hour on a date specified by the department.
