My son wants to join the service once he gets his associate's degree in Geology. Exploring his options at this point. He wants the experience in the service before getting his Bacholar degree.

Resume:
Eagle Scout
4 years heavy machinery training
3 years working his way through school for as gun smith in training.

Is there a job he can do in any branch of the service as a geologist or would he be put in the armory?

Geology Major wants to join the Military. What rating could he fill and use that training?

Enlist in the reserves/NG as an engineering Soldier, Then join ROTC and get a commission as an engineering officer, they are way behind on their STEM quotas.

PO3 Sherry Thornburg I would encourage something that would help him in college or something that is just fun, not something that would help with rocks. An Army Combat Engineer deals a lot with rocks but digging them up for fighting positions and obstacles or throwing them in sandbags probably is not what your son is thinking about. Spend four years doing something fun or exciting or brainy, college will follow and the rest of his life he might be an academic or a doctor of some sort. Telling stories about blowing things up or jumping out of airplanes will be a lot cooler than digging holes to get a jump on studying rocks.

Geology is a lot more than just rocks SFC Weber. Its also maps, engineering foundations, construction, knowing land forms and minerals to find oil, gas, coal, gold etc, etc, and a whole bunch of other things. I only did one semester of geology for a science credit, but it was pretty cool stuff.

PO3 Sherry Thornburg - I know. I'm just saying if he is going to do four years he should do something he enjoys and may help him prepare for college itself, but maybe not be part of his college major. A little adventure is what an 18 year old needs.

The only thing that geology even relates to in the Army that I am aware of is Engineering, which has already been said twice.

Honestly, I’d recommend that he not enlist at all.

I am a geologist who served in the Marines and worked for the Feds. Good job choice, geologists are always needed and paid well.

I would say army side 35G. Promotions are stable and he wouldnt be doing much of the BS tasks that get thrown around. Also it would look good on a resume and opens a door to continue his education with experience in that field if he wants to continue it. It would also walk him into a security clearance which is a big power throw in the civilian world.
