Getting the CAB instead of the CIB: Is there a way to correct this?

A gentleman in my VFW was deployed to Iraq as an Infantryman, and assigned to a Infantry unit. He was tasked to serve as a gunner on a supply convoy, and during the convoy, he was engaged by a target and in turn, engaged and eliminated the target. For his actions, he was awarded the CAB instead of the CIB. If he has papers to prove who he was assigned to (Infantry Co, etc.), is there a way to get the CAB changed to a CIB?

Actually he DOES meet all criteria based on your provided information, and in fact, being that he was assigned to an infantry unit, the ONLY authorized badge would have been the CIB.

Per 600-8-22, Military Awards, the CIB is for personnel with the 11B/11A MOS or AOC.

And the appeal process would begin by gathering all those documents and contacting the Awards and Decorations Branch; the documentation would need to go through the chain of command, with a DA4187 endorsed by the first Brigadier General in the CoC,
(Recommending approval or disapproval will not stop the request from moving forward; all documents will be reviewed to ensure all criteria are met accordingly).

To get a CIB / CMB you have to be a member of an organization that is actively hunting and engaging the enemy. Just being an 11B is not good enough.
Tell him to wear his CAB proudly. It is a top-line badge and ranks 3rd in the list.

This fact naturally precludes the awarding of the badge to those medical personnel who accompany infantry units into a potential engagement area but do not come under enemy fire. Over the years, there has been some confusion concerning the phrase "...in direct support of an infantry unit...". The CMB is intended for, and awarded to, those medical personnel who accompany the infantryman into combat. The Army has never approved of deviations from this purpose and its restrictive criteria.
Now define what "combat" is in comparison to "contact"
Do you agree that living outside the wire and being in constant engagement with the enemy is different from getting in a on-off fire-fight on a convoy?

SFC Michael Hasbun - There's truth to what Jan is saying. AR 60-8-22, section 8-6 (5):
Eligibility is that the "...unit was engaged in active ground combat, to close with and destroy the enemy with direct fires."
Eligibility is that the "...unit was engaged in active ground combat, to close with and destroy the enemy with direct fires."

It's not a unit award however. It is the actions of the individual that will determine eligibility, not the unit.
