Setting goals is a way to vocalize or record your desires. It also provides a means to outline a body of work to accomplish something in life. What are qualities that are important to keep in mind when creating goals for yourself, and why are they important?
I will start by saying one quality is the fact goals have to be tangible. If their is not possibility of accomplishing a goal, it was not realistic in the first place may better be described as a dream.

SMART goals is the key...
Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Realistic
Timely or Time Bound
AND find someone to hold you accountable to the goal!
Your boss, your spouse, your battle buddy, anyone else you can tell and will hold you to it.

Fantastic all around....as CW4 (Join to see) previously stated I would also like to add them all to my toolbox. Thank you!

I believe the picture you posted with the question illustrates my take on goals. It's important to be well rounded as an individual. Too often we associate our goals around our career...or the annual New Year's resolution (physical). We should set goals in all of the areas listed above to ensure that we don't stagnate in any facet of our lives & continue to push forward in order to maximize our lives!

A good goals is one that is important to you and that you are passionate about. I picked a goal early in life (as a teenager) to become an expert at something - just one thing. I also picked up that the goal is not necessarily for the public, its just my own personal thing that I can achieve that means something to me. In my view its not about winning, its about achiving something you didn't think you could. Just my humble opinion.

Fantastic post Sir, thank you for sharing. If you don't mind, I would like to add "Value" as one of my goal tenants. As you stated, the need to be passionate about something provides the fuel to become and expert at the same thing. I think it is important for goals to have both value to the individual and value overall.

I would say whatever your goals, make some attainable so you generate some momentum

You bring up a very important point SSG Izzy Abbass . There are a number of different types of goals, including time based. I like to call them 50m, 100m, or 200m targets to make sure the concept sticks. Very obtainable and constantly having to be added to your list will be your 50m ones. Using this method should provide the momentum needed for future successes regarding individual goals.

It's great when the goals one chooses are also equaly important to others close in your life. The bring you closer together as you work to their accomplishment and make the victory of completing them extremely satisfying.

I think including your family or mentors in your goals defiantly provides value. This inclusion also provides a measure of accountability and motivation to achieve.

Great post CW3 (Join to see) . I like list my upcoming goals for each quarter, whether be personal or professional goals. I'll write down my goals, why I want to achieve those goal and realistic ways to achieve those goals. This process has helped me out for about the last 10 years. Before that I kind of was all over the place. I still achieved many goals that way too but it was oragnized chaos and that gets kind of old after awhile.

I do something very similar, it is amazing to discover that we are not alone in our practices. I am currently implementing a mentorship program with my young pilots heavily focused on the creation and tracking of goals. I will share when I have something to pass, perhaps we can prevent some organized chaos for our present and future soldiers.

That sounds like a plan. I've got templates for 3-5 years plans that I've used for myself in order to present to my raters and senior raters to let them know where I stand in my career and what goals that I plan on achieving while under their supervision. This helps me stay on track and provides my leaders with an understanding of what they can do to help facilitate my progress and development.

I believe that a great quality to have is always being realistic with your goals. Know that you can obtain these goals and always have a time period in which you want to complete your goal.
