In my experience, I was promoted on the same time frame as active duty, however I had to find a position pretty much on my own. Up until the 20 year mark, I would get a promotion and had to find a position. In my case, I had assistance by the Corps of Engineer Human Resource folks. After the 20 year mark, if I hadn't been able to find a position, I would have been retired by the Army Reserves. It really helps to get to know senior soldiers in other units before you come up for promotion.

Spot on sir. I figured that out while still a 1LT. It's good to keep an eye on the road in the USAR. When expecting a promotion soon be looking for that spot and move into it before the promotion takes effect. 1) You'll be in a place of your choosing when it happens, and not be in a rush to take anything. 2) Late promotion notifications will back date pay to DOR if already serving in a position of higher rank.

Thank you Sir. That’s what I’m actually doing. I found an O5 slot, we will see if I get promoted. I will be eligible in 2 weeks. Now time will tell.

MAJ (Join to see) - Are you looking to be a MAJ soon currently sitting in an O5 slot as a O3? I recommend against that. 1) You'll be working much harder than you'll be getting paid for, taking on responsibility and professional risk without any of the benefits. 2) You run the risk of being pushed out by an actual O5 and being put somewhere you didn't plan on. Granted, that can happen to anyone with UMR adjustments but it puts a bullseye on you if you are not sitting in the billet you are Branched to and hold the rank for.

I’m actually a MAJ now. Just moved from the Guard to Reserves. I have ILE and AOC completed and will have TIG in about a week, if I am not wrong that makes me elegible for promotion. I am currently in an O5 slot but I was wondering how promotions in the reserves because the guard is a way different world.

A Milper will go out announcing the upcoming promotion boards. For example when I search Milpers I search on "APL MAJ" which is for branches other than Medical, Legal, Chaplain, etc....

The last MAJ promotion Milper came out last November. The TIG to be in the zone was 5.2 - 6.2 years at the time of the Milper.

Which means............ if you are TIG 5.2+ years and your CCC is done, and you are not flagged you should be looking for an O4 slot ASAP.

As well........... the latest MILPER for FY22 for CPT knocked off an entire year from the TIG zone from the previous boards. So hopefully the same goes for everyone else come FY23.

I also want to mention we need to keep your ear to the ground, and stay ahead of these things. The boards come up, and our board file opens in our HRC profile, and we are supposed to drop the supporting documents (ORB's, OER's, memo's, CCC credentials, etc...) in the board file before the close date, and then that's that. That's basically the entirety of what decides if we get promoted or not.

So on the one side one might argue the NG is like a good old boys club and you need to have help on the inside, and the USAR is on the complete opposite of that where it's like the DMV, the system is generating promotion lists based on databases where information gets uploaded or not, has lots of data inaccuracies and it's up to use to make sure our data is accurate. If it is, then the promotion is all but automatic.

For example, I'm still fighting the system to acknowledge my CCC completion. It still has me as 92A quartermaster when I should be 90A Logistics. THAT IS CRITICAL for me and folks in my branch. But the system has a lot of holes.
