I know many have suspected their military experiences or affiliation cost them a job opportunity, but I am wondering if anyone KNOWS it; if anyone was told they won't get a job because of it. I ask because a guy at my prior unit was told he couldn't get a cop job back home because he was Infantry, and their reasoning being that Infantry is trained to take lives whereas cops are trained to save lives and take lives only as a last resort. If true, that's crap! Hence my curiosity.

I’ve heard of some senior Chief Warrants Officers not getting hired for certain positions because they were too qualified. The fear for the hiring managers were that the over qualified employee would jump ship soon as something better and hire saying would come available.

Yes. It is more routine than one would expect. It is usually identified as a conflict in corporate culture (they are liberal and promote social programs) while the veteran is considered strong on defense and conservative. Might be a valid reason. Probably the worst job I ever had was working for a company, whose values were opposite of mine. Sometimes, not getting a job, is a good thing.

I have also had two occasions when I was told very directly that my military commitment (as a Reservist) conflicted with the demands of the job. It is not legal but I decided I didn't want to work for a company that had a complete disregard for the law. If they felt comfortable breaking the law against discrimination, consider the other laws they felt free to break.

Not denied but I did have to dumb down my resume to that of a HS graduate and take all references of the military out of my resume before I started getting call backs.

That is absurd, but it does happen, my wife had said on many occasions to water down the resume, due to my experience. Why build a base of knowledge and experience to compete, when you are going to be denied.

No one wants to hire someone with 20 years experience .....they want fresh new blood just out of school.

When I first got out, I was told I was over qualified and they were looking for someone they could train. They were looking for a material handling person. I was a lifting and loading specialist, NCOIC of the material handling section and asst NCOIC of a supply Depot. That was the excuse for most of the jobs I applied for. You are over qualified.
