Yes, they send you an email and state that a package is undeliverable and a link to rectify the issue is usually in the email. Once you login to UPS through the link, the scammers have your information and can redirect any package that you may receive in the future.

Some of those links also contain malware that sends your info to the scammers. Some scammers are now sending texts to cell phones too.

As a rule, I cut and paste the suspect tracking numbers from the email to the USPS, FedEx, or any other shipping website. I have these sites bookmarked for easy access, but a simple search will lead you to there tracking website. 9 times out 10 the number is valid, but I'd rather be safe than find that one spam number and have my data compromised. This also works with email from Amazon, Target, Walmart, and other retailers. Another clue that a link is bogus is to hover your mouse cursor over the link and look at the link address usually displayed at the bottom (in Chrome) of the page. it usually covers the last email on the page. if the link starts off as the name of the site dot com, it's probably ok to click, but you can still find out what the email is referring to by going to the site through a bookmark or search engine.

I was a victim of the scam more than once, the sites are bogus and don't track anything. If you have a question or any doubts, call the U S Postal Service. They can tell you whether or not the number is a bogus tracking number.

I have been scammed more than once. The worst was when I was on vacation and they froze my credit card right away.
When my package didn’t go where I wanted it to go the post office says it must be a scam
But the package got to Where was supposed to. I just had the wrong address.

1st Lt Mary James - Be sure when you order stuff that they ship by USPS. FedEx and UPS can't deliver to addresses that use PO Boxes.

A few times the post office told me it was a scam and the last time they said it was legitimate where I have a package coming from the Passport office and that’s been going on the whole month of January. The answer I got was they had to resend it again because of the snowstorm.

Yes, I used to be a rural carrier, the USPS will never notify you by phone. It will always notify the sender. Or the reciever by the yellow " sorry we missed you". The sorting facilities are pretty advanced and rarely screw up peoples packages. Also 3 out of the 4 times they tried it on me, they did it in a group chat and I let everyone know it was a scam.
