Has anyone had negative outcomes from Mephaquin Mondays?

I was pre Mephaquin. I got into a different strain of malaria in northern Cambodia. At the time, they just kept me on primaquine for months. That strain was tenacious in the liver. What it and the meds did was to mess with my enzyme balance which meant I was lethargic and felt like crap for 6 months. Guess the cure was ultimately better than the disease, but it was touch and go for a while. They had us on doxycycline while we were in country but don't know what the protocol is now.

Sir, I'd like to say we have a better handle on it, but I'm not sure I can say to you.
CDR Kenneth Kaiser
What were those things we took in RVN. As I recall it was some form of Quinine. I didn't always remember to take them. Trying to remember the side effects but can't think of anything but that could be either a function of age or maybe the pills...These young kids see to have more fun.

CDR Kenneth Kaiser - Diarrhea was the main concern from quinine. I remember the latrines being stacked with soldiers waiting inline. lol Never had any affect on myself.
There were reports that a study was underway for linking an increase in violence in Ft. Bragg to mefloquine and I know the FDA issued a warning in its wake. In 2010, we only had a handful on it in our brigade.
You can file a claim if you took and and had issues. http://www.publichealth.va.gov/exposures/mefloquine-lariam.asp
Mefloquine (Lariam) - Public Health
Veterans who took mefloquine for protection against malaria while deployed should contact their health care provider if concerned about side effects.

Thanks for the link and deciphering my misspelled word.

Thanks. I love how they change the name for military use. They did the same when trying to give me pharmaceutical Ambien for a leg nerve injury. They wanted me to work up to 3 Ambien daily and go to work. I had one bad experience with 1/2 pill. Lariam.....Jesus. without out knowledge, and they didn't check the interaction with Doxy etc.
Have taken all the the "quins" (prima, chloro, metha sp?) for PI, Gulf, Somalia but have no idea about any lasting impact. I remember stomach issues while taking them but that's about it. Just a rotten stomach and churning, but I guess that was a better alternative than malaria. The gamma globulin shots in each cheek were a pain in the a** for sure though. Has been close to 30 years for some so I guess it never caused anything lasting. Premature senility maybe.

At your age - you say premature senility? CWO3 (Join to see) What does the mirror tell you?

you had bad dreams from doxy? All i ever got out of that was a sun burn and clear skin.

I had what I thought was a dream, near Udari Range, waiting on I MEF for Eager Mace. Turns out I was hearing live feed while semi awake. We had to evac MEU from Kuwait in 24 hours and get back to Somalia.
Never took the anti-malaria drugs. The side effects were too dicey to mess with. In Afghanistan we were in an arid area at high altitude--not exactly mosquito terrain. I was more worried about the cholera outbreak in Kabul when I was there in 2013-14. In Iraq I was never issued any pills so I count myself lucky there.

You were fortunate Colonel. We were a MEU (SOC) with a fine Doc. The HMC trained his Corpsmen like Grunts. He had some time in S. America with high speed low drag units, and along with our Medical Officer they were top notch. We took most all that was on the market, and he demanded we all get gamma globulin shots while still afloat. He must have scored, as we had no malaria from Gulf or Somalia. Some of it screws you up good, but you adapt and deal. Drinking 6-8 liters or more of water daily is enough to give one the ability to crap through a screen door.
I read an article a few years back that was linking the malaria pills to eczema flareups. I don't remember having eczema issues before I took the malaria pills. Now I'm taking claratin daily to keep my eczema in check. I was deployed MAR03-MAR04

They diagnosed me with pitirosisrosia, a form of rosesia. Sure I didn't spell either of those right. Over half of the problems we have is because of the crap they had us taking. The breakouts, nerves, exhaustion, anger.....

3 years psoriasis. Couldn't figure it out. Triceps, ankle, wrist...i thought i had touched something in 2003. Gee, maybe it was all the Meflaquine and doxy for months on end?

Holy shit!! I have been breaking out in blistering rashes everywhere since coming back from afgh in 2013.thought it was something I got into over there.
26th MEU in Afghanastan in 2001 they made us take that crap and there is nothing good about it

Semper Fi Sean. 24th 91-93, 11th before that for awhile. Provisional 4th Marines MEU out of Oki during coup shuffle in PI. Afghan would have been different. Hard on the knees. Overwatch would be the gravy train, if you had solid egress and equipment. On call fires etc. These new calibers have reach. We just fixed all the hard down shit for MEU, BLT, MSSG. ACE ran their own show, Hard to call for a recovery vehicle mid-air. Wrench turners. If Afghan was Appalachia, Somalia was downstream of their sewage. Feeling shitty all the time became habit.
My first deployment was in '06, so thankfully, as far I can remember we didn't have to take those. We did have to take several Anthrax vaccines, which caused reactions in a lot of us.
