I just watched a WWII documentary on Winston Churchill. Great Britain needed a leader like him to give the nation strength when it felt weak. He and FDR colluded together with the Lend Lease Program to give him many ships, air planes, and aircraft carriers. When the US declared war on Japan and Germany, it is said he had the best sleep for years. The survival of his nation dramatically improved as FDR and the US believed defeating the Nazis was the right thing to do.
