So I saw my first military poser today at Wal-Mart of all places. Had Army ACUs, popped collar, what looked like a white turtleneck and Doc Marten's boots, patrol cap on indoors, no name tapes anywhere, Marine Corps Globe-and-Anchor on his pc, no unit patches and an American flag patch with no stars. I asked him what unit he was in, he responded with being an E-7 petty officer in the Navy.

Annnnnd, go...

I've seen my fair share over the decades. When I was active duty in the Corps at Camp Pendleton a Pvt was caught wearing 2nd Lt. bars by the MP's. While serving in the TXARNG years later another PFC was caught in a Captains rank and dress blues. Another guy was caught at a bar posing as a Green Beret. Sad really.

Mostly just ignore posers these days. One homeless man in my town who claims to be a Vet did admit on a local news channel that he actually wasn't a vet but by saying he is he gets more handouts. Though I will never give him a red dime I will not ridicule him either.

Used to see people claim vet at Lowes all the time to get the 10% off.Got so bad with posers saying they didn't have a DD214 on them, they came up with My Lowes. If a vet,go to the store with proof and get a card.

Not sure what catagory this falls into but I worked with a guy who was an armorer on my first tour in Iraq. We would have BS sessions about our experiences on the deployment. Most conversations was him asking me about certain missions I was envolved with. What he would do then is retell the story to others but to where he would be the one on that mission. Honestly when I found out I just shrugged it off. That was until he received a medical discharge and 100% disability through the VA for PTSD. Not that he did not have a rough time over there but because he had confided in other individuals who were not deployed with us of why he had such issues and told them of the events that caused his issues did I get pissed. Now he collects a nice disibility check and has a cush job at the VA as a counselor? Come on!

Was at a local tavern/oyster shack listening to music with a lady friend several years ago. After the band played a song from the late 60's (which we clearly enjoyed) a man at the next table asked if we were vets. (I am a retired Marine officer and the lady was a Army Sgt 1st Class who was medically retired after Desert Storm). When we said yes, he moved over and regaled us with his "experiences" in Viet Nam. He claimed he was a Helicopter pilot with the 101st Airborne who came to Nam in early 1967 and stayed on continuously until 1975. Said he arrived as a Lt and left a Bird Col. Bronze Star, 8 hearts, etc. Obviously, none of his guns and thunder BS made sense. No one stayed in combat for 8 years straight, and no one goes from Lt to Col in 8 years - especially since the 101st left Nam long before Saigon fell in '75. After a I related a story about how, right after 9/11, Joe Foss, top Marine fighter pilot in WWII, former Governor of Montana and Senator, was delayed by airport security because he had a pointed piece of metal they feared might be a weapon. It was his Medal of Honor. He was going to the National Boy Scout Convention and thought the boys would like to see and touch it. My comment was that if our country was in such bad shape that we had to fear Joe Foss hijacking a plane with a Medal of Honor, we are doomed. His response: "the Medal of Honor, yeah, I have one of those too." At which point, I stood up, told him he was a lying piece of sh*t and wasting oxygen good men might need later. He certainly didn't stand up, and we left.

Wearing is one thing but when you claim to be something your not that ups the fraud. I am retired and wear some of my old caries make sure it does not resemble a uniform. I do not want to miss represent what a professional military member looks like in uniform.
