So I saw my first military poser today at Wal-Mart of all places. Had Army ACUs, popped collar, what looked like a white turtleneck and Doc Marten's boots, patrol cap on indoors, no name tapes anywhere, Marine Corps Globe-and-Anchor on his pc, no unit patches and an American flag patch with no stars. I asked him what unit he was in, he responded with being an E-7 petty officer in the Navy.

Annnnnd, go...

We have sat with folks around campfires at campgrounds and listened to their stories of time in the military. A few times my spouse would point out a person obviously had not served or could not have participated in the way they are bragging about and explained to me why but has never felt the need to confront them. Not all posers need to be beat down......just the ones trying to use false claims of service for personal gain such as with politicians and job applicants.

Yes. I kind of figure that they are most likely mentally disabled. My father was a marine. And I lived in his house. As for myself, the only military training I've received was with the USNSCC. I was turned down from joining the Marines because of a blood disorder . Sadly. But would never take up any banner I did not deserve. I think that anyone who put on a uniform and walks around totally out of specks is totally messed up mentally, sadly.

Yes. Years ago while in a maintenance availability in Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, there was a supervisor who routinely claimed he was a SEAL during Vietnam. He was a guy that did not do his job and I was the maintenance coordinator so that added to my growing frustration. One day I lost it and said, "John, the only way you were a SEAL was if you were on a ship and they jammed your ass in a hole to "seal" and stop flooding". He got bent out of shape. I am retired now and there is a guy that hangs out at a local WAWA who claims he was an Army LTC. He is clearly suffering from some form of mental illness. He has enough "Army speak" to perhaps convince someone who never served but I served 35 years including 90 days at Camp Funston at FT Riley with my new Army friends on my way to Iraq in 07/08 so I know he is a poser. He is harmless, never asks for anything, ALWAYS thanks me for my service and just wants to talk, Most are harmless UNLESS they are benefitting in some way financially or through obtaining goods or service through false pretenses.

Yes, called the fake Army Guy out during a Memorial Day Parade. He was getting thanks and praise from everyone around. I called him out when he didn't know what his "Army MOS" was. He said he didn't have an MOS, he was infantry. He got all butt hurt and walked away

Yes - my neighbor's son-in-law had everyone in his wife's family fooled into thinking he was a disabled Vietnam Vet with PTSD and agent orange issues and was pissed at the VA because they wouldn't help him. I am a disabled Vietnam Vet who has helped many others get their VA benefits. When I questioned this slimebag he couldn't tell me a thing about Vietnam, where he was stationed, etc. Then I asked him his age and totally unmasked this poser in front of his wife's family when I pointed out that he would have been all of 7 years old when the war ended! What a dork!

Not good, got drafted in 1966, thought we were all going to Nam but after completing basic and AIT at ft Ord we were sent to Germany. Though we didn't serve in combat we served proudly just the same. My heart goes out to all the young men who are still willing to serve and pay with loss of life and limb and don't understand how these posers can try to steal the glory from the real heroes. God bless and protect our service men.

After retiring, I was working at a liquor store where I talked the owners to give active duty and retired vets a 15% discount. This dude walked up to the counter with his purchase and asked for the discount. When I asked to see his ID card he showed me an inactive reserve (pink) ID card that expired in 1972 with E-2 as his rank. I thanked him for his service but told him that was not an active duty or retiree ID card, so he was not entitled to the discount. He wanted to argue with me, telling me is was a retiree ID card. With a line forming behind him wanting to make purchases and leave, I pulled out MY retiree ID card, showed him what one truly looked like and I wasn't too quiet about it. He left the items on the counter and quickly departed the store. Some posers did actually do some military service but seek honors they did not earn.

The pink retired cards say US Army Reserve Retired and you have that until age 60.
