Here's one for the Radar O'reillys out there. One of my old crew put in paper work to finally receive his awards from RVN. Due to the fact that we were attached to the Korean Marine Corps, in addition to the usual three ribbons and the PUCs that we were awarded, he also received two awards from Korea. I have tried to google what these might be with no luck. Most Koreans awards are to high level officers only. Anyone have any ideas. Also how does one update a DD214 and apply for awards due?

Dennis, here are two sites I have used to purchase items for my units over the past several years. The best one is The Supply Room. They have a very wide selection of military ribbons and medals.

Dennis, send me a PM. What are the exact names for the ones you are missing? I've got a couple other sources.

You need to fill out a DD 149 to get your DD 214 updated. I had to get my rank corrected as I had went on terminal leave so had my DD 214 done before I left and actually got promoted to Sergeant while on terminal leave.

I chose not to re-enlist but had many days of leave saved up so I was able to take 60 days of leave prior to my actual discharge date. You are able to just go home from that point on as long as you check out of all the necessary places.

When I was Discharged out of the Marine Corps back in August 1971, there was so much paper work that I was just overwhelmed. The clerk just kept putting one paper in front of me after another and I was asked to sign off. I was eager to get all of that paper work done with and I really didn't pay too much attention as to what I was signing. Hell, I just got back from Vietnam and I was a Sergeant and all I wanted to do was get out. During my haste, I signed everything. After getting back to the World, I was given a packet of everything I signed. I never look at anything until much later when I applied for VA Benefits. While working with the VA, I sent away for a complete copy of all of my Military Records and when I got them, I noticed so many discrepancies. I received a Certificate of Commendation while in Vietnam and I noticed that they had my Service number wrong. They had inverted two numbers from 91 to 19. I have this Certification and I sent a copy of it to the Dept. of Navy asking them to correct the mistake. They never did. The Commendation was never listed on my DD-214. I also had two MOS's while in the Corps, 0311 and 5591. I also brought that to the attention of the Dept. of Navy and again they did not correct it or list it on my DD-214. While in Vietnam, I received a would to my right arm and was treated and operated on at the Field Hospital in Quang Tri and I have photographs of me with bandages and all . When I received my so called complete Service Record, which included all of my Medical Records, there is no mention at all of ever being at the Field Hospital and being operated on for my wound. I again brought this to the attention of the Dept. of Navy and even sent them a copy of the photographs. I did receive a corrected copy of my DD-214 as I did file a DD-149 requesting that they correct my DD-214. They still did not make any corrections to any of the above. Any advice how to get these discrepancies corrected once and for all? Thanks & SF!

Sgt David G Duchesneau, I'm dealing with a similar situation. On March 1, 2013, I learned that all U.S. Personnel who served “In Country” are eligible for the “Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation (Gallantry Cross) and the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation (Civil Actions). I have written to the Records Department to have these two medals added to my DD-214. I am still writing for a response.

Jay, I wrote to the Records Department in St. Louis several times and even have spoken to them by phone. Every time I get a different response from them and was ultimately told to write to the Department of Navy and file a Form to have my Record reviewed. After several weeks, the Dept. of Navy sent me, what they called was my complete Military File including my Medical Records. They even prefaced it by attaching a one page intro stating in large bold black letters "Available Medical Records." They also included what they called" Official Military Personnel File." After receiving these files and reviewing what they sent is when I noticed the discrepancies that I mentioned above. I wrote them another letter and to date, no corrections have been made or sent to me. I did make note of one thing. Everyone that I did speak with from the Dept. of Navy and the Records Center in St Louis have all told me what to do and everyone of them told me something different. It seems to me that the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing or saying. They all have their own idea or advice on what I should do. Frustrating to say the least.

Foreign awards are awarded by the country they are from. I suggest contacting the Korean embassy in Washington.
