I was recently at Camp Atturbury and many Majors received the news that they have been selected for mandatory retirement. It is imperative to fine tune and prepare yourself for the next chapter in your life.

I am staring at that point when one of these days in the not distant future, I'll take this uniform off and not put it back on. That day's gonna suck. However, what'll suck even more is if I know that day's coming and I do nothing about it.

I keep up with the latest IT job openings and make sure I network with GS workers so I know when a potential employment opportunity may open up. I keep my technical certifications and resume' up to date, while obtaining more certifications for the job I want. I'm currently scheduled to take the Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) certification in December while I'm on break from my Masters in Information Management through Syracuse. Really its about being prepared for the inevitable separation that we all face at some point.

CPT Alexander: Have you thought about going to Devry? I would recommend to send out your resumes and check to see if you would be marketable.

Haven't thought about it, the 53A course is partnered with Syracuse so I only needed 4 classes for my masters.  I last sent out my resume in June while pending the OSB results and received some lucrative offers. I would like to go to the Cyber Protection Brigade and finish out my career in the next 5 to 7 years.  I also had several GS13s look at my resume and work history and they kind of guided me to the certifications that I need to obtain.

Right now, ma'am, I'm running around like a rodent on crack trying to find a home and finish out my career.

My prayers are with you. Ask God and be still and listen to his voice. He will direct your path. God's children are sheltered from life's storms, we have to wait on his guidance and wisdom.

@CH (CPT) Heather Davis - maám, with all due respect. Asking me to be still is like trying to baptize a cat.

How are you ensuring that you are ready for the transition?

That is true because as much as soldiers are responsible for their career development, I think leadership is failing them to. Most of our NCOs are more concerned about their careers than anybody below them. They have ERBs full with military schools they have attended but will not give soldiers below them the information needed or the guidance required for them to get enrolled in some of those schools and classes.

Absolutely, I look back at my career and my haters were my motivators.

Unfortunately commanders now have to ask the question how does sending this person to this school help the mission? I recently sat in a meeting where a BN CDR was asking for money to send Soldiers to school and it was denied due to budget constraints and not really being a priority for the main effort. I agree with CH Davis get a mentor if you're not getting what you need from the unit.

That is so true Sgt Burkhart, I got to my new unit and they were asking me questions about schools and I felt bad for myself. I just came back from deployment and hope to use the down time to see if I can convince my NCOs to enroll me in schools. The only thing I got from 54th was CLS to..smh

Yeah, I'm currently deployed but I have my wish list ready. I have my fingers crossed that I can get something when I get back.
And just like stated above, it is a budget issue. I had schools I was supposed to go to before I PCS'd and they were cancelled because we had lost our budget because we were moving under 82nd Sustainment. What really sucks is that it really hurts the soldiers in the long run.

Ma'am, this article is somewhat startling to me. I have known for a long time that most leave service without the appropriate level of knowledge on resume writing, networking, financial planning, etc, but this study shows major issues in the basics, such as housing and medical care (both physical and mental). Eye opening, and distressing.

MSG Huffman, I think the most single important link is the loss of family and unity. The revamping and refining the way we communicate as a whole.
