The two women who will graduate Friday from the Army’s Ranger School did not seem particularly destined to break that gender barrier. Both were strong students and gifted athletes, like many others who emerge from high schools across the country every year. But they made their mark on the U.S. military this week by tapping rare levels of determination that intensified over time.

First Lt. Shaye Haver, 25, was a star high school soccer player in Texas, making the varsity team as a freshman. She learned to fly an Apache helicopter like her father. First Lt. Kristen Griest, 26, ran cross-country in Connecticut before applying to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., where she would cross paths with Haver for the first time.

Both failed the initial phase of Ranger School but kept trying even as others elected to drop out. On Friday, the two will become the first women to wear the elite Ranger Tab on their uniforms, after exhibiting degrees of perseverance that brought pride to past mentors.

They were hungry enough for it. A lot of men there weren't as hungry as they were.

They were given a year to prepare on Army time, every other advantage possible and someone at the Pentagon or White House told the Army, They will get Ranger tabs. Same for the 38 year old female Army Major who got her tab. She is now known as Mommy Ranger behind her back because everyone involved knows she could never have completed the training without very significant help.

By leading others to do great things under terrible conditions, and by convincing their Ranger Instructors and peers that they deserve the title and the coveted Black and Gold.

I would have to say that they wanted it more than anything else and they were willing to do the work necessary, physical and mental, to complete this.
Will be interesting to see where they go from here.

Congrats to these two young Rangers! They earned it, right time - right place. Many others could have, if given the opportunity. Like many things in life, right time - right place. But in the end, they had to earn it. More will be expected from these young Rangers from this point on; excellence and extreme common sense will be expected from this point on, as they have already proven throughout their lives. Congrats to them.
