Only by example since I am just a worker bee now.

Same way you should do in Military. By example. You can force, coerce, threaten, etc. but that only works for a very short time and gets the people to feel bitter and resentful.

Share praise, keep ass chewing private. Own the process with the workers, even if you did it by yourself. They will work harder for you than if you use their work to advance yourself.

Great advice especially for those of us who are still learning to be a leader still in the military.

Punish in private, praise in public. if you embarrass a subordinate infront of their peers, there will be a lot of resentment and friction between you and the subordinates

Here you go with these great open-minded questions again.
Stay humble.
Help and share info whenever I can.
Listen to understand, not simply to respond.
Hold myself to a higher standard.
Don't judge for I don't know everything about someone's decision at any point and time.

What about you, SPC Margaret Higgins ?

THANK You, for the compliment, Sergeant SGT (Join to see)!
I love that you are a humble leader.
I love that you help out.
I love that you Listen; and not just to respond.
I am very proud of you, Sergeant, for holding yourself to a higher standard.
And judging, to my way of believing, is God's job; not ours. GOOD for YOU on that score as well!
As for me? Well, let's see:
(1) I try to inspire; by example.
(2) I try to understand and be compassionate- to help people with my love.
(3) I try to be as knowledgeable and as accurate as I Possibly can: when helping people with facts; and with my research/knowledge.
(4) I try to be as empathetic/sympathetic as I can be.
(5) I try to call people by their first name (that is if I know them: or if online, if I've spoken with them before...or even in some cases if I have not spoken with them before- provided they don't out rank me).
(6) Most of all, I rely on God to work through me: to help people....and to live my life.
Hope this helps, Sergeant!
Thanks for asking!
-With My Kindest and Warmest Regards, Margaret

adapt to the environment, relax and get to know the people that you are leading. Most important. know what they are capable of and analyze their work habits. You may have to change your style to fit theirs, but that can be a win win situation

SSgt Luke Hunt - Good points. You can't lead everyone the same.

My Leading is easy nowadays. If I want the horses in the barn, I put some grain in a bucket and stand at the door and shake it. If I want the pigs back in the pen, I grab some leftovers and put them in the slop pan. The pigs will follow me anywhere. If I want the barn cats away from me, I squirt them with a squirt gun.

By example as often as possible. I prefer to never ask someone to do something I am not willing to do or have not done. I, like SGT (Join to see) , would like to hear your answer to this great question SPC Margaret Higgins .

Leading by example, SrA Chris "Shadow" McGee, is a wonderful way to lead. Good for you!!
Well, I try to lead by example. I try to help everyone I can; with God working through me. (I am a Christian.) I try to help every Veteran, Active Duty Service Member and Staff Member that I can; out at my local VA. I also am a Coach on Facebook groups: my Group for Suicidal Active Duty and For Suicidal Veterans, my Group for Veterans with Mental Health Issues...or Not, and my Group for Police Officers: Suicidal, Depressed, PTSD. (Those Police Officers who are physically, mentally, emotionally and/or spiritually disabled.)
I also have my group: Margaret C Higgins US Army (Ret).
I am also a photographer; with my FINE ARTS PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY: MARGARET CHRISTIE HIGGINS SHAUN group. ("Shaun" is my nickname.)
Hope this helps, Sir.

Lead from the front
Set the standard, train to the standard and hold them to the standard
Cover and Move - Teamwork
Simple
Prioritize and Execute
Decentralized Command
Military leadership can work very well in civilian world

I try to lead my team in my civilian job but... I have senior management that I am in conflict with and I occasionally run into a thin skinned THS employee... I try to remember they didn't do what I did and so it's not fair to hold them to that standard. I find it difficult at times, irritating, and at times when I know that we accomplished our tasks, pride in them.

I think I'm going to find employment elsewhere though, something not in management... I prefer getting my hands dirty than dealing with the shammers that are my management staff now.
