I was promoted in November of 2020 and then I was flagged in January of 2021 due to failing tape. I hit my 24 month mark in May and was not able to pin SPC due to the flag. The flag was removed in July and I was told that I would be automatically promoted this month. However, I am now being told that TIG pauses/resets when a flag is initiated. After reviewing 600-8-19, I have not been able to find anything that supports or refutes this. I have 27 months TIS and 9 months TIG as an E3, so should I be eligible for automatic promotion or does the TIG pause/reset when a flag is initiated. Any information is appreciated. Thank you

Your TIG does not reset, that's some weird urban legend that junior S1 Soldiers spit out because they can't figure out why you didn't automatically promote. When you have met the TIS and TIG requirements and you are eligible for promotion, you can be promoted to SPC. Your Company Commander must fill out the 4187 promoting you and your S1 must manually promote you.

That is the information that the S1 NCOIC told me.

(Join to see) your S1 NCOIC is incorrect, ask him to show you in the regulation. He is thinking about Good Conduct Medal time. If your S1 NCOIC does not help, go to your BDE S1 NCOIC MSG. If they kick you back, go to your Division IG and they will explain the regulation to your S1

It is not automatic. Your Commander still needs to sign the 4187 authorizing your advancement.

SGT Daniel Weinberger - There should have been a 4187 for you.

SGT Daniel Weinberger, the Reserve system automatically updates an SM's rank in the system upon meeting TIG & TIS, if no Flags are present. This system feeds payroll and updates most other systems. The Commander still has to complete a DA 4187, approving your advancement, for your records. Your Commander at the time, or once they sorted it out, can sign the DA 4187 with an effective date matching the DOR in the system.

Having been flagged has no effect on time in grade what so ever. Having the flag removed opens you back for promotion and awards and schools. Whoever told you that TIG is reset . Needs to show you the regulations on that. I would bet that he or she ether mad that up or was told by anther that does not know themselves.
However Date of rank and time in service does change when you get out then com back in.
Also your time in service does change if you have time in the Reserve's of National Guard.
That is configured by how much you went to drill and A.T. plus any additional time at ether to include Basic, And A.I.T.

How does being flagged impact your time in grade, as well as automatic promotion?

First think I would do is make sure that the flag has been removed Have S-1 check and make sure that the flag has been lifted

The flag is what caused you the problem. You need to make sure it has been removed from the system and not just someone telling you it is gone. Then you need to run this up your NCO support channel. You don't have to be promoted because you meet all the criteria for the next rank. If someone is holding this up you should be counseled on why this is happening. Keep working this up the chain until you get promoted or you get the reason why your not getting promoted.

No it doesn’t pauses it continues so yes you should be promoted the following month of the flag being removed. Talk to HR first before you talk to IG because someone is not doing their job.

Being flagged does not affect your Time in Grade, Time in Service, your accrual of leave time or your pay. Some barracks lawyer wannabe told you that crap about TIG and flags. Just because you hit your 24 month mark as E-3 does not mean that you automatically pin on E-4. The 24 month mark is a minimum, meaning that a commander can require you go longer before he submits a 4187 for your promotion.

Hello
First of all what rank are you going too?. Secondly if you are flagged you will not get promoted despite it being automatic. Remember promotion from E1 to E6 is up to the commander. I am sure your flagged paperwork has been sent to Human Resources.
