So I just got back from a 12 month deployment and did a PC's and the new unit is deploying soon and has me listed as going... How does dwell time work?

SGT Austin Gillum,
Your dwell time is the same length of your last deployment. If you were deployed for nine months, you have nine months dwell.
Also, keep asking questions, don’t let cranky retired folks tell you otherwise. If they don’t have an answer they are better not commenting.

That's what I thought it was but I'm still gonna talk with the s shops and I gotta give these old timers a reason to whine and moan about the new army

It is a unit that has dwell time and while commands may chose to assist people their is no requirement to do so. I deployed in 05 and was back for eight months before going for 15. I had done an inner post transfer so the new unit need my position to go.

I came back from a 16 month deployment in late April 08 and PCSed to Hawaii in late June 08 and PCSed again in June 09 (USASMA). This was when it was supposed to be 90 days dwell time after a deployment. It's all about what Big Army wants you to do. You will be able to get the current Regs for dwell time from your S1. Good luck.

When I got back from Honduras in December '18, the DEMOB Admin office informed me that I had 9 months dwell (the deployment was 9 months). He informed me it was one month dwell per one month gone. But....considering you just did a PCS.....that might not work in your favor. Talk with your new Chain and see what's up. At the same time, I recommend you pack your bags (just in case).

It has changed over the past few years. It used to be 90 days stabilization before you could even PCS after coming back from a deployment. It was waiverable. Unsure what it is now. Recommend getting with your S-1 for the updated policy. I’ll keep looking myself.

Used to be 2 years home for every year deployed; but not always the case! In the meantime look for updates policies and your unit’s packing list!

The way it is supposed to work is this:
You deploy back from say Afghanistan. You are supposed to have a certain period of stabilization before you can be deployed again. The regs that cover this are AR 614-30
This article can help better explain dwell time. Basically it is supposed to be a 1:2 ratio of deployment to dwell time.

A deployment has no damn dwell time, and you should know better. Only station time has dwell time

Not trying to come off as disrespectful but when someone says you should know better chances are you've asked questions you didn't know the answer to
