I believe he is sadly mistaken you do not have a choice if your are order to serve you have to go. Do not care about your political views when it comes to doing your duty. You signed up for it. In my day I enlisted but many were still being drafted they did not get a choice.

He's probably afraid to go to war, it goes along with the territory, whether you like it or not, it's part of your contract, so suck it up and do what you gotta do to protect your country

Sometimes people will hide their fear or cowardice behind a phony cause or stance. I remember when we were headed for Beirut back in the 80's. We had several young Marines claim they would not go to kill their Muslim brothers over oil. The Marine Corps handled the situation as expected. Demoted to E-1. Six months in the brig. Six months no pay. And a Bad Conduct Discharge. Problem solved.
