Do you think more or less of a commander if they get the maximum score possible on their APFT (or whatever test your respective service takes)? During my enlisted days I don't think I ever had a commander who was a PT stud. If I had a commander who couldn't pass a PT test I might honestly think less of them, but I don't know if they really need to blow it out of the water. Thoughts?

The sad thing is I’m about to be 40 and score in the top 5% every APFT.
But ultimately it’s about giving your best. You should give your best at everything you do. Too many SMs these day Officers and Enlisted have no push in themselves these days and it’s really sad when you see those in there early 20’s fail a Physical Fitness Test!

I had a female Commander who could run you into the ground, but she couldn't do 1 pushup to save her life. It never bothered me because she knew who to rely on in Battle. She was a pretty good leader.

None of the commanders that I had, had any problem passing the APFT, one was a West Point grad CPT (Join to see)

As a platoon leader and company commander I told my officers and NCOs that if they wanted a max score for fitness on their efficiency reports they would have to score at least 270 of 300. I purposely kept my score slightly less than 300 and offered a 3-day pass to any E-4 or below who beat me on the APFT.

I understand the question but suspect there is more of the story here. Personally, NO, a commander that can max the physical fitness test is not the measure of him/her as a leader. I have seen both types, worked for both types, and I have found more respect for the ones who were out there trying their best but not maxing it.

I never worried about tests. How they performed in the field was all I cared about. Most folks are nursing injuries and if they ruck up and go, that's enough.

Unless it was posted, Soldiers probably never knew the CMDRs PT score.

PT Test doesn't make u a great and or a good soldier. In my years in service, I have soldier(s) that max out / 300 and they suck at their daily task or 90 days FTX. If my Commander doesn't max but he can LEAD, that's all it matter to me.

As long as they passed it and put forth a good effort is all I cared. When I was a commander I never maxed a PT test but I usually scored over 250
