Staying awake all night in a fighting position, walking on patrol, pulling guard duty at some remote location were sometimes challenging and sometimes boring experiences. When the sun rose after a cold or cold and wet night, feeling the warmth of the sun hitting me seemed to breath new life and energy through me.
I expect many of you have had similar experiences.

LTC Stephen F. for me it was going the opposite direction. I was on an guided missle destroyer. The smoking deck at night was in the breezeway. We had the darkened ship blankets to keep the red lights in the breezeway from causing light pollution. I would go out at night sometimes and just look at the stars. There is nothing in the world like being out there seeing the bioluminescence, the stars, the sky, the moon. It was beautiful. Combine that with the sound of the water hitting the hull of the ship. Just a magical moment. Didn't even realize how much it meant to me until typing out this reply.

My dad was on an LST in the Pacific in WW2. I rather imagine he saw the same. Thanks, PO3 Sherrill, for giving me another chance to see things thru his eyes.

LTC Stephen F. - It is funny how different branches experience simple things. Literally a day and night difference in perceptions.

I probably have---In truth-- I can't remember much about the Vietnam War. I can some of my first tour, but just bits and peace's of the second and third.

CPT Ahmed Faried - that does sound like a beautiful image. I would be surprised if no other military service member took a picture which would remind you of that scene. I certainly hope there is at least one image this side of heaven which will do justice to your memory of that scene.
