Given the apparent rise of public racially-motivated incidents this past 24 months across the country, and the current brouhaha over the confederate battle flag....how big a part will the 'flag flap' be in the 2016 national elections? Should it be? Why or why not? What is the real racial problem in our country? Does it spill over to the military? Should confederate flags be allowed on military posts?

I'm sure it will find a place front and center because Lord knows it's the cause of all the problems in this country. I would like to be a fly on the wall of Clinton campaign HQ to see what made up BS points there coming up for her to talk around on the subject. I mean being from Arkansas she must have some thoughts on it.

I hope a small one, I expect it will be a large one, controversial wedge issues that keep eyes off the real threats and machinations of power are often emphasized.

How much will the 'flag flap' be part of the 2016 national elections?

It will be an issue because the media and candidates will MAKE it an issue.

Very true, this is for South Carolina residents to decide. It's nobody else's business if they don't live there. Folks in New York, San Francisco, Detroit, Chicago etc have completely different views of Southern folks.

Hmm, I tend to disagree on this matter, was it not South Carolina that voted in its legislature to secede from the Union of December 24, 1860? Was it not the same state that " declared that the frequent violations of the Constitution of the United States, by the Federal Government, and its encroachments upon the reserved rights of the States, fully justified this State in then withdrawing from the Federal Union; but in deference to the opinions and wishes of the other slaveholding States, she forbore at that time to exercise this right. Since that time, these encroachments have continued to increase, and further forbearance ceases to be a virtue." Key phrase "other slave holding states." Let us not for one moment forget that this was the opening paragraph of the Declaration to Secession of the State of South Carolina, it had nothing to do with state rights, tradition, heritage, or any other form of BS any modern southerner would have you to believe. The enslavement of a race of people based solely on the color of their skin. Should South Carolina be allowed to fly that flag on their capitol or the grounds of the Capitol? Should he Nazi's be allowed to fly the their flag over Berlin now? I mean this argument can that way as well, should not the Germans have their say in what they want to fly? Hope about the rising Sun, should the Japanese get to fly that as well? Maybe we should allow the Germans the choice of the Imperial Flag of the Kaiser? We defeated the south, put an end to black part of our history, and yet we can't agree that that flag is a sign of disrespect to a segment of our nation. To simply allow it to continue to exist is a slap in the face of not just those who were under this oppression but to those families and descendants who fought to see it erased. No Sir, this is a battle against ignorance and hate, and as long as that reminder of a dark past flies, it stains not just South Carolina but a nation as well.

CW2 (P) Kevin Storm: The answer to your multiple questions is yes. South Carolina, Germany, and Japan can fly whatever flag its people want to fly. At least for now, there is no political or military force responsible for ensuring political correctness throughout the world.

I see flags, banners, bumper stickers etc. Depicting everything one can think of. My wife is Philippine and I live there part of the time, we have a Philippine flag and an American flag on our balcony. I see Vietnamese flags, Mexican flags, Korean flags, not to mention all the different military unit flags everywhere everyday, does ll this "crap" mean we must do away with all these because some wish to assgn a BS label to one of these or all of them? We have so many cultures that speak, eat, dress, worship, celebrate different holidays, so us outlaw all this and force one group's negative opinions on everyone. I do believe the Confederate flag stood for more than racism. Tolerance, understanding and communication is what we should be focusing on, oh by the way....screw Walmart!

Suppose they should be careful of what they preach and look in the closet first.

This isn't the first time this little tiff has happened. It will only affect SC politicians up for re-election. No one else will care in a couple months.

Interesting belt buckle.

My question is "Did they not put the actual flag of the Confederacy on it because they were stupid or simply because they wanted to make more money from people who were too stupid to know what the actual flag of the Confederacy was?".

This flag was never a flag of the confederation, it was the battle flag of the army of northern Virginia led by GEN Lee. I see no reason why it is flying over the capital building of South Carolina. If people really want to complain about the Confederate flag being displayed the current Georgia flag was inspired by the original flag of the confederacy. If anything South Carolina is trying to steal Virginia heritage...
