How should a situation in the MCX about wearing a cover in the building be handled properly?

NEITHER MYSELF OR MY WIFE ARE IN THE HABIT OF TELLING A LIE OR MAKING UP A STORY - IT HAPPENED! FOCUS ON THE QUESTION - NOT WETHER YOU BELIEVE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED OR NOT!

RP Members was this handled properly by the Junior Officer, SgtMaj, or the mother? What would you have done?

THIS WAS A REAL SITUATION THAT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY 12/30/2015

CORRECTION: I've receive collaboration from another lady who also had firsthand knowledge of this incident in the MCX - "The "youth" was not an AD USMC, but part of a group of Young Marines. Her description of this group is that it is one for troubled youth to attempt to instill discipline and maybe bring them into the fold."

I apologize to all of those individuals that I stood firm on with, that it was young Marine Private (based on all the information I received), but the discussion, question, and feedback on how the situation was handled by the Junior Officer, Sgt Mgr, and Mother have been outstanding - that I don't apologize for - thanks

If anything, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and my wife called me at home immediately following the incident - she knew I would enjoy hearing about it. I just said, "that SgtMaj owns that young Marine!"

RP Members this one comes from the wife that works at Camp Pendleton, CA Marine Base in the MCX.

A young "Youth" Marine was in the check-out line with his mother and "CORRECTION" (put his cover on inside!) He was approached by a AD Marine (Junior Officer) and asked to remove the cover. Immediately the young "Youth" Marine took up the defensive and asked the junior officer "who the F*** are you?" The Junior Officer then got into the young "Youth" Marine's face and told him to have some respect and remove the cover - it escalated into a shouting match in the check-out line in the MCX. Coming from the back of the store there was a loud roar from a Sergeant Major in the Marines (built like a tank according to my wife). He bellowed, "both of you shut your mouth there are families in here!" The MCX went silent and several employees and Marines hit the deck (no kidding). The SgtMaj came to the front and grabbed the young "Youth" Marine the by collar escorting him and the Junior Officer out of the MCX with the Young "Youth" Marine's mother yelling, "don't touch my boy!"

If he spoke out without permission then it needed to be addressed

Regardless of who was asking him to remove his cover, the young Marine should have acquiesced. No scene was necessary. If the junior officer was in civilian attire, he could have avoided a scene by showing I.D., then disciplined the young Marine accordingly for the "who the fuck are you?" comment. If the uniform code offender outranked the young officer, the correction should have been made privately and respectfully. For example: call the offender aside and say,"with respect sir/maam, the uniform code prohibits the wearing of a cover indoors with the exception of (note exceptions). I'm sure it was just an oversight, but I wanted to respectfully make you aware."

Do I think this actually happened? No. Do I find it very funny if it did? Yes

LCpl Kayne Pope It did actually happen and you are entitled to your opinion. As a retired Colonel and RallyPoint Volunteer Admin I don't make it a habit of posting crap. Secondly, I don't think its funny that a service member (any service) loses their cool like that and embarrasses those around them. If I would have been there I would have pulled out my ID and handled if very quietly and professionally. Thanks for your feedback Kayne!

The SGM is the ultimate soldier, he knows everything and how to handle these kinds of situations. Right or wrong, you wear your cover (headgear) inside only when you are armed. Especially on Military ground/facilities. Soldiers know the rule, this particular soldier was out of line by questioning an Office he recognized to be an Officer, "Disrespect to a senior Officer" Article 15, UCMJ or even Court-martial if the Officer so desires, the SGM diffused and corrected the situation and I'm sure educated the soldier to proper protocol...

That kid needs so much extra work. Painting rocks all day is a good start. Confined to base for six months with half pay is also a good start. The mother needs to learn her place too.

The JO should of approach the young Marine to tell him to step aside. Once he stepped aside he should of informed him what the instructions say about being covered indoor. If after the fact the young Marine cursed at him then the JO gets the Marines information snd report gim to his unit or call the MPs. As Officers we do not touch anyone or Englisted do not either. Bad call on the JO!

I feel the SgtMaj was correct in addressing the situation. The young Marine should not have been disrespectful to an Officer. The Officer should have known better than to escalate the situation in the MCX. He should have had the Marine arrested. The young Marine should be facing disciplinary action as well as the Officer for conduct unbecoming.

On the spot correction was absolutely the right way to go but not sure in this political climate whether the hands on approach was a wise decision. That having been said, A USMC SGM could smoke a lower enlisted for days based on this scenario. I am sure there may have been a future chain of command involvement for that young Marine and his disrespectful attitude when he was clearly in the wrong!
