How should a situation in the MCX about wearing a cover in the building be handled properly?
NEITHER MYSELF OR MY WIFE ARE IN THE HABIT OF TELLING A LIE OR MAKING UP A STORY - IT HAPPENED! FOCUS ON THE QUESTION - NOT WETHER YOU BELIEVE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED OR NOT!
RP Members was this handled properly by the Junior Officer, SgtMaj, or the mother? What would you have done?
THIS WAS A REAL SITUATION THAT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY 12/30/2015
CORRECTION: I've receive collaboration from another lady who also had firsthand knowledge of this incident in the MCX - "The "youth" was not an AD USMC, but part of a group of Young Marines. Her description of this group is that it is one for troubled youth to attempt to instill discipline and maybe bring them into the fold."
I apologize to all of those individuals that I stood firm on with, that it was young Marine Private (based on all the information I received), but the discussion, question, and feedback on how the situation was handled by the Junior Officer, Sgt Mgr, and Mother have been outstanding - that I don't apologize for - thanks
If anything, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and my wife called me at home immediately following the incident - she knew I would enjoy hearing about it. I just said, "that SgtMaj owns that young Marine!"
RP Members this one comes from the wife that works at Camp Pendleton, CA Marine Base in the MCX.
A young "Youth" Marine was in the check-out line with his mother and "CORRECTION" (put his cover on inside!) He was approached by a AD Marine (Junior Officer) and asked to remove the cover. Immediately the young "Youth" Marine took up the defensive and asked the junior officer "who the F*** are you?" The Junior Officer then got into the young "Youth" Marine's face and told him to have some respect and remove the cover - it escalated into a shouting match in the check-out line in the MCX. Coming from the back of the store there was a loud roar from a Sergeant Major in the Marines (built like a tank according to my wife). He bellowed, "both of you shut your mouth there are families in here!" The MCX went silent and several employees and Marines hit the deck (no kidding). The SgtMaj came to the front and grabbed the young "Youth" Marine the by collar escorting him and the Junior Officer out of the MCX with the Young "Youth" Marine's mother yelling, "don't touch my boy!"

over reaction from the go... similar situation at ARCENT saudi during desert storm. We were in command of the gate and thus did a lot of heads up and saluting... one day a general left by vehicle through the gate... my turn on the gate and as usual... I watched to make sure he cleared the lot. upon entering the lot the colonel .. his aid.. showed up.. they both dismounted and headed to the pedestrian gate back toward the building and us. as they approached I called attention with a salute... everyone snapped but one female stood with her hands by her side waiting on her visitor pass. the general walked up to her and looked at her collar even lifting one with his finger.... the whole compound was silent... and me still saluting... she had a ghostly face at this point, not sure what the hell was going on ...his reply? " nice patches miss"... carry on!!!" she was a volunteer medic with the red cross.. and she definitely felt the wrath of god that day.. but, no harm no foul.

You never attempt to correct a problem in public where you draw others into the situation! Corrective measures are always taken ONE-ON-ONE. Sounds like a power struggle on the part of all three. The Lt. asked for it by stepping out of line! All of us have a measure of pride, could be he was defensive because Mom was there? After all, he's Mom's hero!!

The SgtMaj did what all SNCOs should do. He took charge of the situation and removed both of the parties to a more private place to carry on the conversation. No doubt the "youth" marine got more of a dressing down for improper language to a commissioned officer and the officer was reminded that getting into a shouting match in public make him lose respect.

The only thing I can think of is that when it states a young Marine it is actually meaning one of those really young marines like the cadet type that are found on bases like Okinawa or other enlisted spots because I don't know anyone in their right mind that would tell anyone to go f*** off if they came up to them and told them to take their cover off. Also any Marine with tact would have not handed the s*** out of them and told them to get outside followed by what company are you in and it would have been taken care of from that point on in an NJP manner. I think it's bullshit or the story is being fabricated more and more as it's told.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs
LCpl Cody Hendricks First, thanks for responding, but I need for you to return to the original question at the top. The dynamic of this Question and post just changed based on a second eye witness from Facebook. I received Facebook confirmation from a civilian lady that witness the event as well (so it did indeed happen and it's not Bulls***), but she said is that the "youth" was not an AD USMC, but part of a group of Young Marines. Her description of this group is that it is one for troubled youth to attempt to instill discipline and maybe bring them into the fold. Based on that the Junior Officer most likely could have avoided the whole situation by not saying anything at all. Sorry for the confusion, but there was some great feedback from a Leadership standpoint throughout the various discussions. My apologies Cody!

Great Job Sergeant Major. The Private should have been dropped for 50 and the Officer too for not handling the situation as a US MARINE CORPS OFFICER should have.

The Marine Corps Ways can not be changed by one bitch made person that doesn't want to fallow orders. Is he going to argue back at a Squad leader in the heat of battle? I would make him guard MRE's without any rounds
