How should a situation in the MCX about wearing a cover in the building be handled properly?

NEITHER MYSELF OR MY WIFE ARE IN THE HABIT OF TELLING A LIE OR MAKING UP A STORY - IT HAPPENED! FOCUS ON THE QUESTION - NOT WETHER YOU BELIEVE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED OR NOT!

RP Members was this handled properly by the Junior Officer, SgtMaj, or the mother? What would you have done?

THIS WAS A REAL SITUATION THAT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY 12/30/2015

CORRECTION: I've receive collaboration from another lady who also had firsthand knowledge of this incident in the MCX - "The "youth" was not an AD USMC, but part of a group of Young Marines. Her description of this group is that it is one for troubled youth to attempt to instill discipline and maybe bring them into the fold."

I apologize to all of those individuals that I stood firm on with, that it was young Marine Private (based on all the information I received), but the discussion, question, and feedback on how the situation was handled by the Junior Officer, Sgt Mgr, and Mother have been outstanding - that I don't apologize for - thanks

If anything, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and my wife called me at home immediately following the incident - she knew I would enjoy hearing about it. I just said, "that SgtMaj owns that young Marine!"

RP Members this one comes from the wife that works at Camp Pendleton, CA Marine Base in the MCX.

A young "Youth" Marine was in the check-out line with his mother and "CORRECTION" (put his cover on inside!) He was approached by a AD Marine (Junior Officer) and asked to remove the cover. Immediately the young "Youth" Marine took up the defensive and asked the junior officer "who the F*** are you?" The Junior Officer then got into the young "Youth" Marine's face and told him to have some respect and remove the cover - it escalated into a shouting match in the check-out line in the MCX. Coming from the back of the store there was a loud roar from a Sergeant Major in the Marines (built like a tank according to my wife). He bellowed, "both of you shut your mouth there are families in here!" The MCX went silent and several employees and Marines hit the deck (no kidding). The SgtMaj came to the front and grabbed the young "Youth" Marine the by collar escorting him and the Junior Officer out of the MCX with the Young "Youth" Marine's mother yelling, "don't touch my boy!"

SSG (Join to see) - You mean: SF + SPEC OPS > Terrorist = Destruction.
and with increase forces: 2(SF + SPEC OPS) > Terrorist = Better Destruction

love that story. the young Marine was right, but he should have stepped back once he informed the other one of his mistake. CSM should have taken both at that point.

Somewhat similar situation at KBay. CG said no camo off base other than directly to or from quarters and it was strictly enforced. I encountered a young PFC off base at a convenience store (0-3 at the time). As soon as he stepped out he knew he was busted. He came to attention and I asked if he understood the CG's policy. He said "yes sir". I explained he put me in a very difficult situation. I took out a notebook, got his name, rank, unit, CO and Plt Sgt info. Told him to go directly back to base and he would hear from his CO. From the look on his face he was "not pleased" but saluted, and left. I'm sure he walked on eggshells for a few days or a week waiting for the hammer to fall. I wonder what ever happened to that notebook?

Handling the situation properly is the question to which I say dress down in private, praise in public and competent leaders never show their ass in broad daylight. As such, given the public environment a fatherly and friendly notice serves far better: e.g. "Hey! Private. No covers in doors." Demonstrate with your own, Give a smiling, encouraging, expectant nod (and maybe notice if he doesn't have on a legitimate uniform). Ask questions, clarify, justify, and ensure the correctness of any attitude or belief you may have before acting on it.

If you go over the top and get all DI on people as a knee jerk reaction you need some down time out to get clear on the bullshit in your own system before you go around trying to wipe anyone else's ass.

Gosh, was I just blessed or what? When in uniformed, I always had an enlisted Marine accompany me whenever I walked out the door. That Marine was always available to be a liaison between me and the rest of the world, less other officers. I might see corrections needed, but I was never one to point them out, beyond my liaison.

The SgtMaj did the absolute correct action. Both were out of line to be engaging in that sort of public behavior. The J.O. learned a new lesson, part of the SgtMaj's responsibility, and, the "Youth" Marine found out his behavior will not and can not be tolerated. I can only hope this young person's lesson continued outside and he was addressed in a fashion he will not forget too soon and grow from the experience. The Mother, some folks just don't get it.

Covers are not to be worn indoors. But, as a SSG., if I saw someone jacked up or out of uniform, I would quietly pull them aside to address the situation. A shouting match and hands on is a NO-GO. Now that being said, the youth was unprofessional himself by swearing and causing a scene. It should of been handled differently, in my humble opinion.

Pull the young man aside and ask him why he isn’t wearing his cover. His answer will tell you which way to go
