How should a situation in the MCX about wearing a cover in the building be handled properly?
NEITHER MYSELF OR MY WIFE ARE IN THE HABIT OF TELLING A LIE OR MAKING UP A STORY - IT HAPPENED! FOCUS ON THE QUESTION - NOT WETHER YOU BELIEVE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED OR NOT!
RP Members was this handled properly by the Junior Officer, SgtMaj, or the mother? What would you have done?
THIS WAS A REAL SITUATION THAT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY 12/30/2015
CORRECTION: I've receive collaboration from another lady who also had firsthand knowledge of this incident in the MCX - "The "youth" was not an AD USMC, but part of a group of Young Marines. Her description of this group is that it is one for troubled youth to attempt to instill discipline and maybe bring them into the fold."
I apologize to all of those individuals that I stood firm on with, that it was young Marine Private (based on all the information I received), but the discussion, question, and feedback on how the situation was handled by the Junior Officer, Sgt Mgr, and Mother have been outstanding - that I don't apologize for - thanks
If anything, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and my wife called me at home immediately following the incident - she knew I would enjoy hearing about it. I just said, "that SgtMaj owns that young Marine!"
RP Members this one comes from the wife that works at Camp Pendleton, CA Marine Base in the MCX.
A young "Youth" Marine was in the check-out line with his mother and "CORRECTION" (put his cover on inside!) He was approached by a AD Marine (Junior Officer) and asked to remove the cover. Immediately the young "Youth" Marine took up the defensive and asked the junior officer "who the F*** are you?" The Junior Officer then got into the young "Youth" Marine's face and told him to have some respect and remove the cover - it escalated into a shouting match in the check-out line in the MCX. Coming from the back of the store there was a loud roar from a Sergeant Major in the Marines (built like a tank according to my wife). He bellowed, "both of you shut your mouth there are families in here!" The MCX went silent and several employees and Marines hit the deck (no kidding). The SgtMaj came to the front and grabbed the young "Youth" Marine the by collar escorting him and the Junior Officer out of the MCX with the Young "Youth" Marine's mother yelling, "don't touch my boy!"

There is something missing from this story. Just going to drop that and leave that there.
As to to appropriateness of the action in the MCX? If the young Marine was in uniform with his mother, whether on duty or not and had his cover on and mouthed off as he did then he is in the wrong straight down the line.
At the point where it escalated into a shouting match in public that was when BOTH the Marine in line and the Junior Officer were in the wrong.
I can tell you though this sounds fishy as EVERY military person that goes through boot has it drilled into them by an unmerciful cadre to remove their covers when indoors and you learn that lesson quick or you spend a lot of time pounding out pushups. I cannot see any enlisted person acting in this unprofessional manner.

The Young Marine was wrong. Head gear is only worn inside as part of a duty or official function. Not knowing how the officer approached the young Marine may have had something to do his reaction.
Still Last time I checked officer still out ranks enlisted. Now when it comes to A Sargent Major. If The Officer if they have any brains they will go along with the experience vs. rank.

The officer should never have gotten into a public shouting match. He should identify himself and instruct the young Marine as to what he wanted him to do. It is remarkable that a young Marine would react with that kind of language in front of his mother or anyone else since most likely everyone out ranks him. SgtMaj. did what a SgtMaj does.............take charge and provide leadership to both the young Marine and the junior officer.

I would leave him and go straight to his Squad Leader. "You talk to him Sergeant then bring him straight to my office". I expect the Squad Leader would refresh his memory as to living in the Stockade and as a Clean Sleeve, receiving much less money. As soon as he walked into mt office I would began reading Article 31 from the UCMJ. when I saw his pant leg begin to quiver, I would began chewing him out! I'll know when I've reached him and will stop. If it was a FIRST OFFENSE I will tell him to think about what we have discussed and send him to the barracks. If it was second or more offince he would go straight to the stockade. The First Souldier would start the paperwork to rid the Army of a Goodup!

Good question someone asked- At that time are you allowed to "thrash" said Marine and his mommy?

We immediately go after this "very confused" Marine Pvt or PFC, and I am not sticking up for him or his "mommy" one bit. But I do question if this Marine was possibly section 8 and his mother was there because she is visiting the young lad while final paperwork is being completed to get him the hell out of our beloved USMC. Just a question or something to maybe even rationalize why this "possible mental patient" would act that way. If not....then it's scary that a Marine would have the audacity to act that way. Always goes back in my head "what's going to happen in combat"?

It appears to me that the young officer should have handled the situation in private. It was not a safety issue or emergency. A little diplomacy would have done the job without creating a scene. The young Marine overreacted and disrespected an officer. The SgtMaj took immediate and decisive action and defused the situation. As to extra duty/charges/punishment-something for sure. I hope the young officer received some 'counseling' from the SgtMaj. If not it might happen again. Nothing for the mother (grin).
