How should a situation in the MCX about wearing a cover in the building be handled properly?

NEITHER MYSELF OR MY WIFE ARE IN THE HABIT OF TELLING A LIE OR MAKING UP A STORY - IT HAPPENED! FOCUS ON THE QUESTION - NOT WETHER YOU BELIEVE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED OR NOT!

RP Members was this handled properly by the Junior Officer, SgtMaj, or the mother? What would you have done?

THIS WAS A REAL SITUATION THAT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY 12/30/2015

CORRECTION: I've receive collaboration from another lady who also had firsthand knowledge of this incident in the MCX - "The "youth" was not an AD USMC, but part of a group of Young Marines. Her description of this group is that it is one for troubled youth to attempt to instill discipline and maybe bring them into the fold."

I apologize to all of those individuals that I stood firm on with, that it was young Marine Private (based on all the information I received), but the discussion, question, and feedback on how the situation was handled by the Junior Officer, Sgt Mgr, and Mother have been outstanding - that I don't apologize for - thanks

If anything, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and my wife called me at home immediately following the incident - she knew I would enjoy hearing about it. I just said, "that SgtMaj owns that young Marine!"

RP Members this one comes from the wife that works at Camp Pendleton, CA Marine Base in the MCX.

A young "Youth" Marine was in the check-out line with his mother and "CORRECTION" (put his cover on inside!) He was approached by a AD Marine (Junior Officer) and asked to remove the cover. Immediately the young "Youth" Marine took up the defensive and asked the junior officer "who the F*** are you?" The Junior Officer then got into the young "Youth" Marine's face and told him to have some respect and remove the cover - it escalated into a shouting match in the check-out line in the MCX. Coming from the back of the store there was a loud roar from a Sergeant Major in the Marines (built like a tank according to my wife). He bellowed, "both of you shut your mouth there are families in here!" The MCX went silent and several employees and Marines hit the deck (no kidding). The SgtMaj came to the front and grabbed the young "Youth" Marine the by collar escorting him and the Junior Officer out of the MCX with the Young "Youth" Marine's mother yelling, "don't touch my boy!"

A similar situation actually happened to me when I was a young Officer...except there were no other family members just his buddy. His uniform was opened, boots unbloused, unauthorized T-shirt, and hat cocked back on his head...I actually thought I was being punked. When I approached him he stated he was on his lunch break...I attempted to correct him on the spot (outside and away from public) and he and his friend got attitude. I got his unit name, called his first shirt and commander from the BX phone (no cell phones) and directed hi to not adjust anything and followed him to his commanders office. His commander and 1st Sgt took it from there.

I tell that story to say this, that young officer could have handled it better...away from public eye and his mother and he needs a mentoring moment with his superiors. However, for an enlisted troop to get attitude with a proper correction from a higher ranking individual was absolutely wrong and prejudicial to good order and discipline and should have been handled appropriately disciplined.

Sounds like charges from within the Article 88-92 range could be leveled against the young marine. The one that is for 'Disrespect towards a superior commissioned officer,' if I recall correctly, would hit hard and land some brig time.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs - I can only imagine that this PVT was section 8 and was on his last leg of about to be discharged medically. I pray to GOD we do not have peeps in our Corps today that are that UN SAT. Very scary. As for the officer, I don't see anything wrong in what he did, and that some mentoring by superior officers would be beneficial. As in regards to the Sgt Major, cannot say a word due to whatever they say goes in my book, LMAO!! Im veteran and still know better, lol. Semper FI

That was a very stupid act on the young Marine's part. I would prefer to swim in an alligator farm than come up against a SGTMAJ. I had some of the greatest SGTMAJ's and to have one pissed at me would kill me.

I was more afraid of my SGTMAJs than I was of my officers. Displeasing any one of them was not something I wanted to do.

Silly Mom, the Marines are for adults ;-) Presuming the 'junior officer' was identifiable as such by his attire, this would be, in my day, be one very busy young Marine...for a long, long time....I do smell a mythical account here perhaps....

Kudo's to the CSM, bad news for the young marine, and I hope the CSM got the name of the officer. If they young marine (and mother) were that disrespectful, I hope Captains Mast is the least of his worries.

I'm not a Marine, but if a Soldier had done this to me as a Jounir Officer, I wouldn't have shouted, I would have let him continue to escalate while I maintained my composure, until an SGM or other Senior NCO snatch him up. I would have just kept asking him over and over again what unit he was in, and stating the regulation regarding customs and curtsies. I've had young Soldiers try to bow up when I needed to correct them and I would just ask for the unit, and then get my PSG or when I was a CO my 1SG to come with me and pay a visit to unit. That young Marine was in the wrong, but that Young Officer needed to maintain his composure. Also I don't care if parents are there or not, if he's in uniform he needs to wear it correctly regardless, but I'd see it all the time so it doesn't surprise me, well a little surprising that it was a Marine, they are usually pretty disciplined. Also good on that SGM, doing what NCOs need to do.

Well said! I hope marines respect what they earned, if they don't, turn it in and get out. The corps is about discipline and honor and respect! That's unacceptable to disrespect rank! However the junior officer should not abuse his power and handle the situation with tact, if the junior enlisted continues to disrespect hopefully another no would step up! Great on the sgt maj but I'm with some other warriors, it's rare for a marine to full on walk in a po and not remove his cover! Either a dirtbag or brain dead

No matter what your rank, you have a duty to make on the spot uniform corrections. Even if I am not in uniform I Would still make a correction on a uniform issue. You just need to remember that you need to do it with respect.

The young Marine was wrong, Out of order and plain disrespectful! First if an officer approaches you to address you about being out of uniform. Your only answer is yes sir or make make the connection and when that officer is done, he or she is suppose to say carry on Marine. No Marine officer worth his or her salt will ever get into a shouting match with an enlisted man or woman.
That Sgt. Major should not have had to step in on an Officer. Extra duty is to light, office hours will be more appropriate in this case.
I served from 79 to 88 HQ Co. 2nd Mar Division and VMA 533 Hawks A-6 Intruders. I've seen Staff NCO'S jack a smart mouth Lcpl in a heartbeat. And no one whined about it.

I have honestly seen situations similar to this where the junior soldier popped off with disrespect straight out the gate in a public place. I don't know if the senior soldier handled it to the best of his ability but I do know it's a difficult situation to be in. You can't walk away but there is not much you can do with that type of soldier in that situation. I think the CSM did the right thing by intercepting. As for the mom... not all parents can handle the ways of the military nor understand them.

They can learn though! Never a wrong time to be corrected, even with family there although should not have been a yelling match. Once that junior started off though it's open game for that sgtmaj to be a real marine

Reminds me when I was enlisted at Maxwell AFB, home Air University and more officers than should be allowed at one place. I was an E5 and I quietly addressed a brand new officer in the parking lot of the PX that she was wearing her flight cap backwards. She started screaming at me about with her thick hair it fit better and who was I as an enlisted person to tell her how to wear her uniform. My polite, quiet, comment to her became a raging, shout fest with her doing all the shouting. Everyone was watching as she wrote down my name and promised me that this was not the end of it. She finished my railing and the Commandant of Air University, a two-star proceeded to give her a railing she would never forget. The benefit for me was he remembered my name and endorsed me when it was time for me to apply for commissioning.

The Marine whose mother got involved may not have extra duty, but life will not be pleasant with the reputation he will get for being a mama's boy. I suspect there is less to the story and we are getting the embellished version especially since I don't know many sons, Marine or not who uses that type of language in front of their mother without a railing from mom.

The young marine needs to be sent back for retraining. I would NEVER talk like that in front of my mother because I was raised better than that. I was also taught in the military you do as you are told!

If the premise that your Mother is to be revered is correct, then this young man was wrong on that level also.

Mama raised me right in the first place. I didn't need to be told twice. I reared my kids the same way: if you're not immediately obedient, you're disobeying. (In case of an emergency and I need a lightning fast response to save their life/limbs.) Loosened the leash as they grew older and were self-reliant
