Personally, I think that the different color belts are a much better idea that way you can avoid an unneeded sharp complaint. (some people are petty like that)

We didn't worry about rank during PT. When attending PT with our unit, we know our Officers and Enlisted and respect was always shown. In individual PT, it was rarely an issue. At the Base Gym, everyone had the same goals and it was easy. Officer and Enlisted easily worked out side by side, and often spotted those who needed help. If you feel you are dealing with an Officer of superior rank, just say Sir out of respect and go about your workout. I never felt the need to address a Sgt by rank in the middle of a run.

I personally think this is beyond stupid. PT time is for conducting PT now worrying about what ranks are around. I never liked all the BS during PT. Stopping training because the 1SG or Commander showed up was ridiculous. If you are conducting proper training you have nothing to worry about. Make sure you are following the training plan and that everyone is participating and doing the exercises correctly and there is no issue.

If you absolutely must have a different colour belt, do like we did at Fort Sill. Yellow for everyone except commanders, 1SGs and CSMs who wore red.

I really don't want to "Punch/stick" another NCO.
We all have an off day, let this go please...
I would like to invite you to complain about other things....
You complain about PT rank. It should be easily seen...
I complain about:
Helicopter crash.
Helicopter hard landing aircraft destroyed.
Whipflash like 5 times in my 100 or so paratroop landings AT BRAGG. The ones at Benning were worth nothing (right those were the free ones).
I lead a mission and 7 people went to the FOB to get emergency medical treatment and that was my bad decision....
All I got was a cunsusian and lacerations on my face.
Later PTSD treatment from the VA to make it ok again.

There are so many things we do in this vocation.
God knows we give our "pounds of flesh" here or there (litarlly or physically).

The thing is...
Things Like this remember Jack and Jane serving.
Remember Sgt, Ssg trying to lead.
We do the best as we can at the moment.
I personally have conversations about upset about can't see rank insignia on a PT uniform.

Lord love a duck wish you well.
Please speak to any of the things I mentioned here.

Can you mention when I did not loose my head from CrashHawk rotors in a sand storm in Iraq when I was on Air guard.
More things more important.

I could say how stupid it was about denied Cammle backs in the day, article 15 when cought.

Now standard issue to all.....
Thanks friend move on...

As long as you are respectfully and professional (as you should always be) it shouldn't matter about differentiating your rank in a PT setting. I expect to receive the same common courtesy as my brethren would. When you begin putting a label on things is when you begin to target certain groups. Also you should know your people, putting on a universal PT uniform does not suddenly make them invisible. Just some random thoughts.

We've already transitioned to the different color reflective belts. My only issue is if its mandated, the unit supply should have enough to issue to all servicemembers.

Changes like this make me wonder if we're really uniformed across the board or if we're slowly but surely separating ourselves as individuals. Hmm.

What does this thing gost $10-$20?
Joe/Jane spends that on porn and beer.
Pass the hat. Get someone out of money thiers.
Take care of your Squad... Or ask for help from your leader.
This is not new. 1986 the Army had this problem.
General GW had this problem in that revolutionary war.
This has been going on for hundreds of years.
How do you not understand this as a NCO.
I understand (possibly) what you are doing...
But if you were my assistant squad leader you and I would work it out.
Like I would be working to get you out of the military.
This is not what you are meant to be.
Join politics, get out of the military!!!!
I would bet that every/any time Army has always had this problem.
I figured it out as an E-4(p)... I bet you as a full fledged SGT can figure this muffler out.
1. You are a NCO... BUY it off post. Set the example.
2. Talk to your Squad leader (you e5, I was a squad leader as an E5, it is a finincial pain).
3. Talk to your E6 and your LT and ask for help, after talking to your E6 and E7.
4. E6 or E7 will solve any problem unless you are about ready to retire from the military.

How about none. Rank shouldn't matter if you're doing the right thing. For the most part, everyone in the unit know each other and if they don't, mutual respect and professionalism should eliminate the need for rank identification. 25th ID does it here in Hawaii, we in 8th TSC do not and I personally don't have an issue wearing the same color belt with the newest Privates.

Rank shouldn't matter if doing the wrong thing either. Any one should be able to step up and fix the screw up.

More slack may be granted privates. More is expected of NCOs and fewer excuses will fly. More tact may be required when correcting officers and its helpful to distinguish the young 2LT from the young SPC when holding officers to a higher standard than a private.

People can look very different at 0600 out on the PT field compared to 0900 in the office. While I may know everyone in my unit, I certainly have not met all the other personnel on base that PT. It is nice to know if you are dealing with a dumb ass junior officer or a smart ass junior enlisted.

My first drill as a Commander was an SRP, which meant we all reported to the SRP site in the IPFU. I was the XO for over a year prior to taking command, so most of the men in the unit knew me already. I had one of my new PVTs come up to me at SRP and ask me what the senior leadership was like. He may or may not have made some comments about his Squad leader. I had to laugh a little bit when my 1SG came up and the PVT realized who he was talking to.

Personally I don't see the need for rank on the IPFU. The men in your unit should know who you are. If not you've got bigger problems than what color PT belt to buy. If you need to employ rank with someone outside your formation it is very easy to introduce yourself before providing direction. If our senior leaders believe this does need to be addressed, designating a specific color of PT belt is the most common sense answer in my opinion.

Question to a question. Why should it matter? If you are doing unit PT and no one knows who the leaders are, I say we have a problem. When I was a LCpl I knew who my NCOS, SNCOS and officers were. When I was an officer I knew who my Marines were.

Sir the only issue I see is when you are in a pt area, and you may run into different Soldiers from different units, that you may or may not recognize. I do agree that this whole conversation about PT belts, rank on the PT belt, and whatever else is way too out of control. I can see the reason for rank on a PT belt, but at the same time I can only see it if you are doing PT and there is a reasonable chance that you may not recognize Soldiers in that area, other than that I think it has become an ego boost more than anything.

Obviously color coordinate, something like:

Green for enlisted
Yellow for WO
Blue for Officers

Then from there you wear one belt per each rank. Therefore I would be wearing three blue PT belts.

Bad idea? Just because a SGM would be wearing 9 green belts? Sounds awesome to me.

I am all for respecting rank and rendering the proper honors; however I was always thought you don't have to render such honors when it interferes with your duties. On the PT Field, you are there to PT, not go to parade rest/position of attention when a NCO/Officer enters the PT area!

Let's get back to focusing on the real problem: soldiers not passing PT tests
