I am Infantry team leader with approximately 6 years. I just received a new squad leader for our combat deployment. She is a female (which I don't have a problem with) but she is a 42A and 88M. I've know my leadership in my unit my entire enlistment and they have said I do a good job but she seems to be the NCO that saids I'm not a good team leader. I just feel that she should have been put in a Infantry squad leader role all because ase she did a 3 week reclass course and ALC for a deployment. I honestly don't trust her judgment and I am not sure how to handle this. We got in an argument and I walked away so I'm not sure how to handle this.

SGT Gardner, you need to take a deep internal look into some personal biases. If you didn’t care if she was a female, you would have referred to her as just another soldier/NCO. You’re a team leader, she’s a squad leader, and she was put in that position by that platoon sergeant so if you really have an issue, maybe it’s you that needs to do some soul searching and figure out if you’re the problem. Additionally, if you have 6 years experience, you REALLY need to figure out how you haven’t made SSG yet when it’s easier for an 11B to promote than a 42A
You need to look internally at your own biases. If it doesn’t matter that she’s female, why bring it up? Why the need to highlight that you “don’t have a problem” with her presence in the unit?
If you are hung up on gender roles within the Army you might as well get out and find another career. Eschelons above your reality have already determined who is/isn’t eligible for each billet. That includes what experiences are required prior to assignment. Your opinion on the matter isn’t valuable enough to garner an audience. Too blunt? Maybe—but you should take a step back and realize that the people making decisions to assign Soldiers are working at a level that far exceeds platoon, squad, or team.
Why don’t you try talking to her? Ask if she needs support or help. Do as you’re told. Give advice on best practices. Prove yourself. Work on self-improvement. And let go of your personal bias…
