Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

I would calmly explain that he will do the task assigned or face disciplinary action. That is the proper military action to take but in my mind I would be taking another course of action.

Since this is a bad apple and would get people killed in combat, I would give him a direct order that he would disobey! Court martial, and out as undesirable! Best to use the system to beat his butt! That's why it is there!

I would have to ask myself several questions. Does this Soldier have prior issues with work being delegated to him/her? To me this is a time to pull the Soldier to the side and talk/counsel. There could be a underlying issue. Problems at home, pay issues, etc; "I will know my Soldiers and place their needs above my own".

Remain firm on your assignment, reprimand the E-2 with a reminder that failure to comply could result in an article 15 disciplinary action.

Been in this situation with a known malcontent. Tuned him up, in front of of the division. He reported me. Because he was a malcontent the The dept head squelched it. The dept. head was a maverick.
Had it been another sailor with good evals i would have handled it differently. Firmly believe in keeping things in house if possible

On the record , give him/her a counseling, assign them to restriction and extra duty. Off the record, excuse them and take them out back and wear their ass out! Then assign them some extra duty!
