Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

I would skip over him, and give everyone else their job. Then after everyone fell out I would hold him back and explain in multiple ways why and how they would get the job done and for how long they would be doing it. If it continued to persist I would consult my E6 and proceed from there.

I once had a specialist smart mouth me in formation. I took her aside after formation, it was close of day formation, and had her stand at parade rest, in the strictest sense (modified attention) and gave her a chewing of get life for about 30 mins with a write up. never had a problem again.

Well over the years you learn and grow. The bottom line is little shit worth educating and if they are will in sink and stick. Tailor your response but you have to immediately respond or the dipsticks buds will lose their respect for command. My immediate response drop everybody but him for 50, then dismiss all but smart ass and explain to the error of thinking he could get away with such crap. Then explain that Top is always looking for volunteers and they are now at the top of "can do" list. During my time 70's & 80's I used everything from bunk adapters to scare tactics you escalated as necessary but you know what I only kicked out one troop for this kind of attitude.
