I am considering reclassing to the 88K MOS and was wondering if anyone could give me some info on it?

I came from the aviation side to 88K more than 20 years ago. I did it to be more marketable in marine electronics as well as getting some sailing time.
That being said, the watercraft field is a completely different animal from the aviation side. I never got assigned to an ocean going vessel.
I did recently work as a contractor supporting the marine electronics on board the Army vessels. They do deploy a lot. As an 88K you do a lot of deck maintenance ( chipping paint, cleaning, painting, deck PM's, etc.). Have you looked at 88L? They maintain and repair the engines, machinery and electrical.
Best of luck!

This MOS was a great experience for me. Depending on what size vessel your assigned to, would determine how much knowledge you would have to learn.
Your first level would be Seaman. You would have to learn knots (nautical type), fire fighting, Seamenship...
Second level: Coxwain. depending on the size of the vessel this could be considered the captain of the boat. Otherwise, the larger vessels have WO, CWO and I beleive officers.
If you love the water, this would be a great career.

I loved it, but only a third of your sea time transfers to civilian sector (merchant marines)
