I am considering the chaplaincy. What are the pros/cons of being an active duty Army Chaplain?

I can’t speak to a Chaplains challenged outside those of other Soldiers, I can say that they are a very valuable part of the units and the Army. A good Chaplain is God sent, no pun intended.

The pros are for me, greatest ministry career I’ve ever had. Plus, stick with it long enough and your life is changed gor the better forever. Cons would be you and your spouse myst both be called by God to this challenging ministry. Not just you. But if you text CHAPLAIN to GOARMY you will learn details.

Pros: You help soldiers and you monitor the morale of the unit and report it to the Battalion CO.

Cons: You monitor the unit's morale and report back to the Bn. Commander... Your mission is first to the service, not the soldier. There's not really a "priest/penitent" privilege. It's likely very stressful to choose what to say about individual situations. I recall a young, enlisted Chaplain's Assistant who was troubled by some things he was told. He spoke to his Chaplain and the troop ended up completing suicide because the troubles caused the loss of his TSSCI, which made the troop ineligible to work his MOS. After 23 years active ministry following my enlistment, I know how much I carry emotionally for people we served and for myself. Bless your sweet heart as you serve the service members.

Thanks that is a very cogent and descriptive narrative. Sometimes people internalize others pain. I can kind of empathize. I was helping a wife whose husband was dying of cancer, and I internalized a lot of the pain.
