I went into recruiting service in 1987. I was given the worst schools in the Houston, Pasadena Texas area. I left active duty after 2 years of that nightmare. Got called back to active for Dessert Shield/Storm in my old AFSC and it was a breath of fresh air after Recruiting service.

Imagine your riding a bike. The bike is on fire. Your on fire. Everything is on fire. Life is hell. Actually the recruiting part and the soldiers you put in are awesome. You have to realize it is about them and not you. I found the toughest part at first was not being able to get upset when recruits do dumb things cause they do not know like soldiers that have gone to training.

Many of the comments below I agree with. The best part for me was dealing with the "kids". The worst part was my command. The hero to zero mentality. I recruited in Wyoming, 1985 to 1988. Most of the recruits joined out of patriotism and for college money as a secondary benefit.

Best/worst 3 years of my life. It's a very stressful duty and it's so true that you can go from hero to zero in a month. The first year was smiling and dialing and the second and third I was killing it. I came to work at 0900 and left by 1600. My station won station of the year and I was meritoriously promoted so it wasn't all bad.

Best time of my career this far. All these comments are very bias. It truely depends on the "team" you have, the location and how willing your CoC is to take your side when things don't come to fruition. I extended another year (4 years) to continue my tour and got promoted to E7 and moved on to Fort Polk, LA. (Recruiting was definitively better). 14 years of service and been to fort polk twice, leonard wood, korea, fort stewart, fort riley. It was the most stabilizing assignment for my family of 7. I would just say to be careful where you choose and make the best of it as I did.

I was a Marine recruiter from 91-94 and 96-00, you'll have your good days and some days a tour in Iraq didn't seem so bad. Keep your head up, hand out your business cards to everyone, and dig in for the fight. Recruiter's duty will definitely show those that have the intestinal fortitude to survive.

Do not do it. I was actuality given a voice between Recruiting and Drill Sergeant. DS time was long hours yet one of most rewarding assignments.
