I am seeking advice and mentorship on how to be a good admin NCOIC not PLT SGT. Most of my experience thus far is as a team leader, squad leader and shop NCOIC. I am new to the world of tracking administrative missions taskings for a unit headquarters.

I would suggest you look at it as an opportunity to broaden your skill set. Administrative know how translates very well as your career progresses.

As a First Sergeant, I would tell you what I would want:
1. Track stuff that matters, even if it doesn't seem important. NCOERs, awards, promotion board information, meetings, DA 6s... Your leaders get busy. Having a guy in the CP help us keep it all straight is invaluable.
2. Find ways to get things done. Don't be the NCO that needs validation from a Senior NCO to do stuff that needs to happen. Take initiative; we will thank you for it.
3. Beat your leaders to the office. Enough so that you are organized and can spin the command team up on the day's activities succinctly and thoroughly. Not by a lot; 15 minutes should suffice if you are organized at all.
4. Keep quiet. You will hear a lot of things that aren't for consumption in the general population. Betray the confidence and be prepared to take a HEAT round that you definitely do not want. We also don't want your opinion (as you get more familiar with your leaders, this will be tempting) unless we ask for it. When you do speak up, stay in your lane and don't guess. If you don't know, look it up.

Good luck SGT Nia Chiaraluce

Great responses by some seniors, I am in transition to this role as well. I came in to the HQ team when everyone on the team was new or under tasked. Here is what I have been doing...
1- Utilize the tools the Army provides. we have successfully implemented the Milsuites tool and are better able to track outstanding action items and assign tasks across the leadership team. totally free, CAC card log on so people can access anywhere they can get onto AKO, private only those you add can see the work.

2- Consolidated trackers...we had seperate Leave, Pass, School/TDY and Duty trackers...Now we have one tool that enables leaders to knock out Troop to Task and better plan the upcoming taskings and training.

3-Communicate- We notify the PLT SGT's and Squad Leaders when paperwork for their SM is making its way through the pipeline. I reduced the traffic in the office and on the phones. We don't have people wondering did my Leave get approved or did my ERB get updated.

4- Build an SOP- No one can do it all, all the time. A great SOP can reduce your out of office headaches and set you up for an easy transition when it is time to move on. This can be built on the Milsuites tool, so it can be fluid and easily passed to anyone who needs it.
