I'm 19 and I deploy in April with the Guard. What's the best way and time to tell my parents?

LTC Stephen C. is correct 2LT (Join to see), bad news doesn't get better with age. How the message is delivered will have a big impact on how it is received also.

ASAP is better! That way you have the time to plan all that you need to with them. Procrastination does not make things better.

Just do it in person. The first time one of my Units called us some family members did not handle it well on the phone (when their loved one called) and it was a race to get some help there. Not trying to scare you, they're your parents go talk to them.

Pass the potatoes, BTW I'm going to deploy in April.
You're 19 correct? You had better grab your sack and man up.
On the flip side if you joined without "support" you can tell them at least I'm not a drunk ass, do nothing college kid.

Look here Cpl. I went both ways with it. He is if age and it is tough. However he made a step not many people do like yourself, like myself no? It sucks to be in his position but he asked the question. Now he can beat around thrush and wait or tell the know and give it time to dink in as has been mentioned.
Moreover as the Jr. Vice-Commander at Keever-Wire VFW Post here in Haysville, KS. He can contact me at [login to see] and I'll gladly help him break the news. So unless you want to help young Cpl. Go about your way, let us more seasoned NCOs help out. I'll gladly take your call as well. I'm here to help.

Maybe he doesn't like grabbing his sack and I think he can "man up" without doing so. I know you meant no harm, but there's a way to deliver advice and that's how you deliver it.
Rather they "supported" him or not.. Always respect where you came from.

All the best in letting your parents know. It's a tough situation but one you'll be able to handle.
