I’m a 68C that isn’t eligible to attend the promotion board yet but want to get a head start on ALC phase 1. What can I do?

PT: 250
Weapons: 39/40
Awards: 70 points
Residential: 16 points
Civilian Ed: 180 Maxed

I understand you have to be promotable to take priority on the OML, is there anyway I can atleast be assigned phase 1 to get the ball rolling?

Nope. There is no way to get any phase of ALC unless promotable because of the new system and so many people who are promotable needing ALC. Get promotable and you’ll be slotted because you have enough points.

UPDATE**** So I called my NCOES Branch Manager and pretty much he said he can’t do anything for me until I get that P status. This is how the step program is messing with soldiers career! I have to wait until I’m eligible to pin on, then I get to work on what I need to promote...how does that even make sense? If school is now needed to pin on why can’t I start it, or attend it prior to being eligible to pin on 6?

SGT Romero, I am not sure what you mean by the STEP program messing with Soldier's careers. The STEP program, however frustrating, was a needed program to stop promoting NCOs that then go and dodge BLC/ALC/SLC. I made the E7 list in Sept of 16'. I didn't pin until August of 17', because I attended SLC in June. Before the STEP program I'd have likely been promoted in January. Did it suck? Sure. What you CAN do, is continue to go to NCO of the Month/Quarter boards so that the moment you become eligible for the board, that 1SG/CSM that has seen you over and over again, makes sure you go and get the P. I've seen stellar Soldiers, APFT studs, high speeds that have to go to the board several times because they just aren't good at them. So, focus on what you can control, don't get frustrated with what you can't, and make progress every day. ALC is too easy, along with Phase 1, that'll come, getting that P should be your main focus, and you can prepare for that.

My suggestion is to figure out what is stopping you from being boarded? If its a question of TIS, then focus on your current duties and working with the ones above you to learn what their responsibilities are. If you meet TIS/TIG then the real question you should be asking is why haven't you been given the opportunity to board? Develope yourself, and you will be developing your knowledge to pass ALC. You can also look at the milsuite curriculum for the ALC course. It will tell you all the materials and manuals they will cover, so you can begin studying long before you go. The step program is just verifying that schools are being completed. Promotions aren't based on your performance, but your potential to perform. Ask the right questions to the right people, develop your professional knowledge, and you have already proven your potential.
