If you receive a severance and then receive a disability rating from the VA with disability pay, you won't receive any money until you've paid back the amount you received.
For example:
The Army rates you at 10% and you receive a $20,000 severance, the VA rates you at 30% and you receive $400 a month. 20,000/400=58 months. You will wait 50 months prior to receiving any VA payments.

SGT (Join to see) I know that federal jobs require you to buy back your years of active duty time in order to apply them to a federal retirement.

SFC (Join to see) I did not explain myself correctly, allow me to try again.
If accepting separation pay upon Your ETS, and then getting a federal job as a civilian you may be required to pay that separation pay back.
As for buying your time back, I was told it was optional, but I havent crossed that bridge yet. In anycase buying your time back towards the federal retirement seems like a good idea, but seperate from paying back your separation pay.

SGT (Join to see) oh wow, I didn't know that. There are always so many additional rules for retirements and separations, it seems like each person I talk to tells me more.
The few people I met who did switch said it was a good thing and that they were able to buy it back over time

Not sure what you're being MED boarded for, but if given the chance, don't take the money. It's not worth it in the long run. Not all instances give you the option to refuse, so good luck.
