Brasília (AFP) - Brazil will welcome Syrian refugees with "open arms," President Dilma Rousseff said, as various Latin American nations sought to help with the human tidal wave fleeing the war-torn country.
In a video message marking Brazil's Independence Day, Rousseff said she wanted to "reiterate the government's willingness to welcome those who, driven from their homeland, want to come live, work and contribute to the prosperity and peace of Brazil."
"Especially in these difficult times, these times of crisis, we have to welcome refugees with open arms," she added.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro ordered his foreign ministry to take steps to receive 20,000 Syrians in the country.

The UN has called the Syrian exodus the largest refugee crisis in the past 25 years. What comes next?
Since 2011, more than 4 million Syrian refugees have left (Reuters). Riots are breaking out throughout Europe. Some people are calling this crisis an invasion and 'economic terrorism' and some are bending over backwards for this humanitarian crisis. The Pope is urging all churches in Europe to take in/sponsor a refugee family and many churches are filled to overflowing. As temperatures rise, so does the desperation. Riots are breaking out through all of Europe. Refugees are demanding to leave Uruguay now because the cost of living is too high. The UN is sending boats to take them to Greece and Turkey, but thousands are already rioting due to overcrowding. I am in extreme conflict with the issue. My Christian side says care for those in need. My military side has every one of my 'Spidey senses' tingling. Some news outlets on the ground are saying the crowds are dominated by military aged males, whereas others are primarily only showing the women and children. Where do you stand in the middle of all this insanity?
