I'm working towards my Bachelors, and TA only covers up to 5 classes a fiscal year, where else, besides FAFSA, can I find grants?

SGT Zila Winstead, I don't want to assume that you're going to a traditional school/university. But if you are, I recommend that you head to your Bursar's/Admissions/Financial Aid Office. There is more unclaimed money waiting in the educational coffers than actually claimed. The school should be able to help guide you in this search.

Sir, I have just recently started speaking to my advisor again, but just figured I would get a head start and see if there is else where I can look. But thank you for the information, I will be sure to push for my university to give me all the unclaimed money I can get.

Don't forget DANTES, CLEPS, & Excelsior Tests at Base education. Many (Most) schools will take up to 30 Transfer Credits (1 year). DANTES / Excelsior Tests include Upper Level credits. All of the above is FREE for Active Duty.

SGT Zila Winstead I will point this out. If in doubt, take the CLEP. I have 6 credits in Accounting. I know NOTHING about accounting. But, I didn't have to take an accounting class... More importantly, I didn't have to PAY for 6 credits of an accounting class.
Save your TA & more importantly your GI Bill for things that are important. If you can avoid wasting money, and TIME (a resource you cannot get back), do so. It takes 90 minutes to take a CLEP (et al). Best case scenario, you walk out with 6 credits (or 3 Upper Level). Worst Case you take the class, or it doesn't count for your degree. Costs you nothing.

Sgt Aaron Kennedy, MS - I have about 2 years left in the military and I attempting to get as much done while I am still in before I begin to use my GI or 9/11 Bill. I'm hoping I only have a few classes left once I am out, that way I can use the rest for my Masters.

TSgt (Join to see) SGT Zila Winstead I've mentioned it in other posts, but I have One (1), as in Singular, actual class, in a classroom in my BS. Everything else was Tested out of, or from my military experience.
I was lucky, I found a school that would take that many classes, and didn't have a residency requirement, as well as a degree program that worked with what I already had... but I made it work.
I start my MS next month, and I have almost my entire MGIB to work with (34 months), which if I time it right should cover it.

Look into pell grants and look up KY and TN government pages. You really have to look through the page and they'll point you in the right direction. The money is out there

Also look into your state's education department. California looks out for Califorinians as long as you meet the criteria you know. Maybe your state does the same, that might be another avenue

Be careful, CLEP is not accepted by every school. Make sure you choose a school to finish your degree that actually accepts your credits. Most schools have HOPE grants, ask your school's VA representative :)

Utilize your search engine of choice with phrases such as "how can I pay for school" "what scholarships are available?" (Hint: A LOT. Many target to specific demographics and degree programs) DeCA offers some as well. I also know Air Force Sergeants Association offers some as well (for AF NCOs and dependents) Get involved with the Army equiv and see what they have to offer. Don't forget Veterans organizations as well.

I have put off my Masters because of this too. BUT... I did find out that the VA has a "Top Up" program that will pay educational costs over what TA pays for. The only catch is that you have to be enrolled in school AND pay out of pocket FIRST! THEN VA will reimburse your out of pocket costs. If you are trusting enough to wait for the VA to reimburse you, look into this program.

There is tons of free money out there for veterans. Your home state has money available as well as the federal student aid route. Either way, you should have no issues going to school and not having to pay out of your own pocket. I just requested Federal aid and got enough to cover my last 4 classes. But there is free money to have.

Are you a member of any specific communities? Sometimes these communities have grants available, especially if you work for them, do research or whatever...

There are countless grants out there for Soldiers. You just have to do a bit of research. Also, since you are at Campbell, got to the ED center and talk to a counselor and they will be happy to help you out
